Can I simulate multiple monitors in OS X?

I am just starting a Java class in college, and I was on a Unix box today with a 21" monitor - that was simulating four monitors. Someone told me it was either CDE or GNOME, whatever that means.

Is there any way I can do that on my iBook?

Sounds like you're talking about Virtual Desktops. Do a search for it on Versiontracker, I think there's one called Codetek Virtual Desktop, but it might not be freeware.

Just found it. It's kinda neet... $30 to register, until then you can only use two side-by-side.

Eh... it's not as great as it was on that Unix box. Even though it's kinda cool, it's not as well executed, and it's really no simpler than just layering your apps instead.
