MB c2d 2gb ram won't play a rental dvd

my wife's MB (same setup same age) will

why

all software updates up to date

suggestions

    called applecare

    responded at 9am est in 20 seconds

    requested to use cd cleaner

    called back when this didn't work

    response at 10am est <5minutes

    will replace superdrive

    fedx shipping box to me

    overnight to apple repair

    will be overnighted to me when fixed
