I know Mini-displayport to HDMI does not carry Audio in the new MacBook Pro's but does that also count for Windows Vista/7 running on them? Anyone tried that or is it a hardware issue?

Apple didn't do a full displayport implementation, it did mini-displayport it's own creation (which is being added to the DisplayPort 1.2 standard. Mini displayport does not implement audio. The signals are not passed.

In short audio is missing by design.
Are you sure about that? From what I have heard and Wikipedia Mini displayport is pin compatible with DisplayPort. So the question is whether or not Apple have connected it to some audio device.
I don't know of any vendors that are shipping DisplayPort connections that send audio.
Apple's Mini DisplayPort connector has every single pin that is contained in the larger connector so the issue of lack of audio has to do with something else.
It would be nice if anyone else would actually build some mini-DP devices or a mini-DP to Standard-DP cable so we can test this. Right now there's the 24" ACD and...well, the 24" ACD.
Do standard DP to HDMI adapters support audio? I don't think we're really going to see an answer to this until consumer displayport displays with built-in audio and DP to Mini-DP adapters show up...if they ever do.

Yeah, it sucks. HDMI for the win, whatever the naysayers say. The small % that gives a crap about daisy-chaining does not affect me.
*NOTE* AUDIO: This adapter will support audio only if your source device allows audio output through the Mini DisplayPorts interface. If you're not sure, please check with the manufacturer or website, to confirm if your device allows audio out through the Mini-DP interface.
Doesn't seem like a great guarantee. But, I will buy one so I can come back and give out to you, personally
For the record, are you employed or affiliated with Monoprice?

UPDATE.......
I have changed my mind! It doesn't do audio. Seeing as this is an Apple forum, we'll assume that folks here are talking about MacBooks.
What I ask is simple. Show me a a bunch of DP enabled laptops that send audio through the DP cable and thus through an HDMI adapter. I love how people just jump to the conclusion that Apple did this on purpose. We don't even know if the spec is setup right now to route audio.

1. It's only going to give you video output—you will have to find another way to route your audio from your new MacBook or MacBook Pro.
Apple purposely thwarts sending audio through Mini DisplayPort
Substantive Evidence:
None given
Conclusion:
cannot be substantiated
Thinkpads with DisplayPort also do not send audio
Dell doesn't route audio either
Again

The facts is:
Mini-DP does support audio through.
MacBook Pro does not support audio through Mini-DP.
Whether it is a hardware or software issue is unclear.
Whether it audio works on Windows is unclear.
Any, additions?
Hhm, gfx with HDMI have a soundcard integrated, don't they? Then this could be a hardware issue so a driver don't fix it.

There aren't that many companies making Mini-DP adapters and monoprice is the most visible.

I'm not sure what you're saying, but Ok.
I'm not sure what you're saying, but Ok.
I'm saying that the easiest example would probably be monoprice.
