Stupid question: I figured that voice control was not unique to 3GS. Am I wrong? It seems so after upgrading my 3G to firmware 3.0. I thought it was part of the update as it doesn't seem it needs any additional hardware.

The main additions the 3.0 OS brought to my 3G iPhone (that I can tell) is the voice recorder app, cut and paste, the flipable keyboard in Apple apps, search capabilities, and the ability to turn on the ability to remotely locate/clear/beep my phone. I use US AT&T, so tethering and MMS are presently unavailable, but I understand that other carriers are offering those capabilities.
Several apps were upgraded - stocks, for instance, now flips and offers more functionality.
The things I thought that would be available but aren't are the capability to use my Jawbone bluetooth headset as an audio input/output device in the iPod app and voice recorder app, and voice control/dialing. I've had a bug at times where the output from my iPhone was routed to my headset, so I know it's technically possible. I don't understand the reason behind the decision to not expand that capability.

Yeah, I don't get it. I saw the other features and they are cool. But I don't see why 3.0 wouldn't have voice dialing/control. Anyone else?
Just found out. 3G doesn't have voice command. Balls.
No worries. Voice Control doesn't work worth a damn anyway. It makes you sound like a complete idiot trying to make it call your contacts. "I SAID CALL TED NOT JENNY". I speak English with a midwestern US accent, more like no accent what so ever. I also speak Spanish (poorly). Voice control can only find my contacts about 10% of the time in English but more like 50% of the time if I pronounce the names as if they were Spanish. It does pick up Japanese names fairly well I've discovered. Totally easier just to pull over to the side of the road and click on the number instead of frustrating yourself with this useless feature.
I might add that the Google app does a much better job of understanding my voice.
For a software-only feature that is exclusive to the 3rd generation iPhone, Apple really should have gone all out with this feature.
What we got is a terribly watered down and limited Voice Control, compared to what it could be (and probably will once Apple figures out a new way to charge us for it).
1 If it can recognize silly expressions such as "Play more like this" for creating a genius playlist on the fly, than it can certainly be programmed to Lauch Applications (easily), and Start a new E-mail or SMS (instead of useless phone call).
"Open Safari"
"E-mail Bob"
"Send Text to 123,456,7890"
As long as you assign a buzz word to trigger the first action, the follow up should be easily recognizable.
"Visit att.com"
"Check the weather"
"Turn Off Wi Fi"
"Turn Up Brightness 20 percent"
You get the idea. Voice could be the new Touch, if they got it right.
