Australians have so far missed out on hefty price cuts to the existing iPhone despite the impending release of a new model because Apple refuses to drop the price it charges carriers for the older device, a well-placed industry source has revealed.

In the US, the 8GB iPhone 3G is now an entry-level handset costing $US99 ($123). This is far less than the new iPhone 3G S, which costs $US199 and $US299 for the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively.

The iPhone 3G S launches in Australia on Friday, with Optus today becoming the first carrier to reveal pricing details. But plans for the existing 8GB model have not changed.

The source, who spoke on condition on anonymity, blamed Apple for this, saying the lack of a price cut from Apple's end made it impossible for carriers to in turn drop their prices.

"There may have been a bit of movement but it's inconsequential," the source said.
