New HDD Installed, Software Won't Install :(

Hi All,

I'm quite frustrated with my macbook at the moment. I had it for a year and a half and then the hard drive crashed on me. I had it diagnosed at the Apple store I bought it at and had mac friends searching for a new drive for me once I got the news it was indeed the hard drive. I purchased this one from newegg http://m.newegg.com/Product/Product....82E16822148336 and the installation was smooth and painless and I am glad I did not pay to have the store do it, but now my software will not install. I have taken snapshots with my digital camera of where I get stuck in installing OS X. These problems are exactly what I got when the old hard drive crashed.

I followed these instructions when installing the new hard drive and the software. As you can see I cannot click on options under the Partions tab in Disk Utilities.

I also got these errors (I apologize for the picture being so blurry).

Am I doing something totally wrong or did I get a bad hard drive from newegg? I would greatly appreciate any help. I want my mac back.

That first photo shows you trying to partition the DVD. Your HDD isn't even showing in the left side panel (it should, even if unformatted)

You're going to have to figure out why the drive's not showing up before you can format it and install OSX.

Do you hear the drive spinning up when you start your machine? You perhaps didn't push the drive into the slot firmly enough when installing it.

I pulled everything out and it is now indeed installed. I can see it along the side. Now, I am stuck on the Partition part. I can click options and select GUID, but it will not let me name it. Is that important or can I go on and install my software now? I followed these instructions to get me where I am at right now.

Do I need to format the hard drive? It says it is unformatted right now.

Thanks for all your help. I have no idea why it didn't work at first, but I am happy I can at least see it along the side.

Yes, in the partition section, if you choose the partition type as GUID and in the drop -down menu, select HFS+ Extended (journaled) then hit partition, you should be ok after that.

The drive name is not important right now but you should be able to edit it - once it's partitioned and formatted, you should be able to do that.

Do extended journaling since HDs come formatted for winblows and their stone age file system.

everything is FINALLY working!!! i've never done this before so i was a little hesitant, but after doing it i am glad i did not shell out the money the mac place wanted to charge for a new hdd plus installing it. i saved myself at least $250. i'm assuming the first go around it wasn't pushed in far enough. thanks for all your help.

I hope the money was worth the endless hours spent.

what?... you've never paid for education???

In this case, "time spent" was the currency used to pay for a little "education".
