In some applications, or if I write some files to CD, filenames get truncated in the manner indicated in the thread title. What causes this?

Applications that use the old MacOS Toolbox (pre-Carbon) file system calls will do that. They need to be updated.

MS Word does this all the time. The name is fine in the finder, but in word it shows that garbled crap. Something about 32 letter filename limit or something. Stooopid word....

Good call torifile. No long filename support...This is so embarassing I can't believe they don't patch it.
