Some CD-Rs show folders with "No Items"

Hi,

I am experiencing a weird problem and would like to know if anyone else has either faced or heard of something similar.

I have a lot of CDs on which I have backed up my files over the years, plus I also have a few Video CDs (VCDs). Today when I was checking those CDs, some of them seemed to have empty folders (Finder shows "No Items" under the folder icon). I know for a fact that the folders are not empty.

This also happens with some VCDs. VCDs (for those unfamiliar with these) are basically movies on CDs that can either be played in a VCD player or in a computer using any standard MPEG player like VLC. Some of these VCDs show up as having "No Items" under any folder. I know the movie is there.

Unfortunately I have not been able to check these on a Windows or Linux machine yet, so I do not know if it is a problem with my MacBook or the CDs themselves.

Does anyone know of anyone else reporting such a problem?

Thanks and cheers

Which system version are you using?

Also when you get info on one the folders that the files seem to be missing does it say how many items are in the folder as well as the size of space taken.

Sorry, I knew I missed something! Am running 10.4..8 on a MacBook. And no, when I Get Info, there is no info on how may items are in the folder. The size only gives me the total size of the CD itself, not each individual folder. In Finder's icon view I see "No Items" under each folder.

Do you have access to a PPC mac by any chance to test the CD to see if the files show up.

Also do you have Roxio Toast handy?

No, I do not have Roxio Toast. I do have a PPC Mac, but that's in Ontario (I work in Alberta) and I can only check that when I go home for Christmas.

I did however check the CDs on my work Laptop tday (Windows) and they worked!!! So it does have something to do with either my CD drive on the MacBook or the MacBook itself (which can be verified by trying it out on a PPC Mac).

I was think that the drive or intel mac was to somehow blame.

You could if possible copy the files and burn them to a new CD on the PC as a test to see if they are then seen on the intel mac.

Also you could try this on the MacBook put in the CD which the files don't show up and open disk utility and make an image of the CD to the Hard disk and see if the files appear within the image.

which app was used to originally burn the CD's?

I will do some checking and see what info I can dig up.
