Removing Halftone distortion from scanned images

Okay. This isn't probably the best forum for this question, but thought I'd give it a shot...

I have several B & W .jpg files scanned from a high school yearbook. (The files were previously scanned -- not captured through Photoshop Elements).

The images are artifact ridden with what I believe is known as "halftone" distortion. (I'm wondering if I've got the terminology wrong and hence my inability to find anything on the web...)

In any event, is there a filter in PS Elements to simply improve these scans? I thought there was something called "descreen", but can't seem to find it.

Thanks.

(I'm using PS Elements 4.0 on a Mac)

There is a descreen filter in my scanner's TWAIN utility when I ask Photoshop Elements 3 to scan. I have not seen a descreen filter in PSE.

Try the Despeckle filter in Photoshop Elements. It should remove some of the distortion.

I also have a plug in called Grain Surgery that has done wonders for grain and Moiré.

Here's a simple step by step of scanning previously printed images.
