    Good job.

    From Macminute:

Apple today announced a new Spring line of iMacs, a new 17-inch widescreen model featuring a 1 GHz PowerPC G4 processor and 133 MHz system bus; 256MB of Double Data Rate (DDR) memory; a faster 4x SuperDrive for playing and burning CDs and DVDs; and internal support for AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth, for US$1,799. The new 15-inch flat panel model features an 800 MHz G4 processor and is now priced at $1,299. Apple also announced lower pricing on its line of eMac consumer and education computers, dropping the prices of the 700MHz model to $999 and the 800MHz model to $1,299. iMac and eMac desktops are available immediately through the Apple Store, Apple retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers.

Edit: First note - no L3 cache on these iMacs.

so basically there are two iMacs now. from what i can tell the "custom built" just has some more memory.

These prices aren't bad, but i was really hoping for a sub-1000 iMac.

    Still overpriced

Heh, they better put out a Press Release later today saying something like "effective immediately, additional $100 price drops"... or there better be a nice promo being introduced this week. Otherwise people will still be bringing in ads saying "See... look at Product A with such and such for $899!"

Underwhelming to say the least ...

The high-end has more RAM, Airport Extreme built in, Bluetooth Built in, but that's it ... sorry, but that price point stinks.

The $1799 is still high IMHO, but then again, I'm not in charge

Oh well, the wait continues ...

The price drop just isn't enough to make me get one. I was hoping for another $200 off the iMac's price.

Guess I'll keep chugging away with my PBG4-500.

Lets face this is Apple, they dont change overnight! All this talk of sub $1000 iMacs was a bit unrealistic... <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[oyvey]" />

The $1799 doesn't have the airport extreme or blue tooth modules, you still have to buy those separately. Only the $2400 model has these pre-installed.

The 15" appears to be just a repackaged old model from the tech specs with a bigger/faster HD and a faster combo drive.

Quick question: Did the prior iMacs' graphics cards use DDR memory or SDR? I can't remember.

The PR says "Spring iMacs" so I bet there will also be "Summer iMacs." Obviously this is a transition time for the iMac...the 15" inch, no 802.11g, no DDR, GeForce2 MX...

I do have to say, that after over a year with no updates of any kind, that does kind of feel as though Apple just slid one into me while i slept!

There is now no 'mid-range' option, they have removed the 15' Superdrive system. To be honest, I preferred them as they were.

Anyone else notice that Apple now has 4X DVD-R media listed (19.95 5-pack)? Were these around before today?
  • Reply 14 of 173
All I think is that there should be a 17" with a combo drive for like $1499 - 1599.

OMG that would be so nice... I'd prob have my parents get that for themselves in a minute. As it stands now... eh I'm not sure.

    Hello all.

I would say the $1299 model is a disappointment.

But the $1799 model has some nice additions (at least I think these are new):

    - 4x Superdrive

    - 64MB graphics

    - DDR memory

    - 133Mhz bus

    - s-video/composite out (with adapter)

    - audio line-in

    - possibility to add internal bluetooth / airport extreme

    No FW800, either...

How do they want to 'push' this technology if it's available only on few models?

Agreed. Apple isn't very confident in FW800. Even 1 port would be nice.

Um Cos FW800 is a "Pro" interface and what exactly would an iMac owner do with it? (esp as you still cant buy any FW800 periferals)
