I can't stand the "duh duh duh" stuff Mencia does, and I hated it enough to cancel it off my tivo. He has done some pretty funny stuff, though, like the "It's hard out here for a Whore" parody of "hard out here for a Pimp".

If you have been at a public school in the last 15 years, you would most likely be in total agreement with the "so we lower the standards" bit: it is totaly how it works. The accuracy of that song to moddern society is why I found it so interesting...

Just because he has a point, doesn't mean he executed it well comedically. And it's Ironic he is complaining about society lowering standards, since his audience obviously lowered their standards from Chappelle's Show to his. Mind of Mencia is just a modern day version of Hee Haw with jokes about all races instead of just rednecks. The skits seem like they are written and made by high school students instead of a 39 year old "comedian"... Mencia has also been known to plagiarize other comedian's material and use it in his act as his own... Hence why he is a Hack.

Spam.. are you one for private schools or school vouchers?

Those won't work, either. The way I see it, public schools are in trouble because people refuse to put money into it.. when they do, they misdirect it. Instead of paying for competitive academic programs and educational materials that kids need, and raising teacher wages, we waste it on bullshit like new football stadiums and making competitive high school teams. Physical fitness should be done in school, but I feel that putting athletics before academics (which is what schools are there for) is wrong. Schools shouldn't have to compete for money.. it's asinine.

By the way, I find Mencia amusing.. and I don't care. Nyah.

Some of Mencia's stuff is amazing though. As with any comedian, there's good and bad. For example, the episode where he calls the DMV to get a "NIGGA" vanity plate, finds that it's not allowed, and eventually learns that the "WETBACK" plate is available.

Anyway, his message is that uptight, white-liberal bourgeois need to chill. It seems as though that has just tested accurate.

"a recent publication by the United States Department of Education has admitted that the average cost of public education per pupil is slightly more than double the cost per pupil of a private education, even though public schools have more students per teacher"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_education

Vouchers seem to work pretty well in British Columbia:

"Contrary to the fears of American liberals, issuing vouchers hasn't reduced the overall level of educational quality. Since 2000, Canadian schools have consistently ranked among the world's top five in the rankings compiled every three years by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Within Canada, the Alberta and BC schools are the best of this best, turning out students whose performance compares favorably with their top-ranked Japanese and Finnish peers. (The US, in contrast, has typically finished in the high teens among the 31 OECD countries ranked in recent years.)"

I couldn't have cited a better source. The problem is the teacher's unions and the bullshit fed to parents... any time they hear their kids education is in trouble, they shy away from private schools, vouchers, competition in schooling, etc.

I would scrap the whole mess and open it to brutal competition for kids between schools. Vouchers, private sponsorship... whatever it takes. The current school system is utter garbage. As a student, I was bored out of my mind, and decided that the only one who could teach me was me. I continue to learn every day even though I've been out of school for more than 2 decades. If I had the resources available to me back then that are available now (the net, Google, etc.) I would have gotten further faster, but I still try to take advantage of what is around.

There's a problem with that voucher and privatization crap.. the majority of people who use it are the fucking rich.

I lived in Northwest Florida, and I've seen this first hand; the upper class kids would get to go to a Preporatory or private school or get a voucher. Who's left to fend for themselves in the neglected public schools? The lower class and minority kids.

Let's not just pay our taxes and fix the problem, no.. let's just run away from it and go somewhere else.

Guess I'm just one of those socialistic, bleeding heart liberals.

Why not smoke a spliff and ride your bike to the top of a 2500 foot mountain?

Charter schools tend to do much better than public schools as well. Explain that. Time and time again, over the last 30 years, liberal naysayers continue to be proven wrong -- with real world evidence -- that privatization is a generally negative process. All evidence seems to point to the opposite. Sure, there will be incidents where it's not perfect, but overall, I'd argue, efforts to privatize public resources has resulted well for everyone.

So, in reality, the term "bleeding heart" should probably be altered to "bleeding brain."

You just don't get it. We would save money by shutting down the public schools altogether and sending everybody to private school.

And voucher systems leave *more* money for the people left behind in the public schools, because the voucher costs less than the space in the public school.

Okay, charter schools are doing better why? Because the kids in them are the "priviledged" ones.. you know, the upper class? They have more access to educational resources, which is unfair the last time I checked.

Oh, by the way, if everyone were to be transferred to a private school, it wouldn't be private anymore, now would it?

Excuse me, but I don't believe in having an educational hierarchy. I believe in giving every child, regardless of class or status, an equally challenging and fulfilling education. Private and charter schools, for the most part, would rather roll over and die than to have that happen, because then their "upper crust" kids and parents wouldn't feel priviledged anymore.

Sorry boys, but I believe that you all don't "get it." Privatization is bullshit. It's not about saving money, it's about educating our children.. all our children.

The kids that go to charter schools in North Carolina are not rich, for the most part.

I just don't understand why you would want the current system to stay in place, when it is both inferior and more expensive than the alternative. None of your points make any sense - we already have an educational hierarchy, with some private schools costing more than others. Private schools come in all flavors, and some would accept vouchers while others would not - in the end we would end up with a better school system where you could choose between a number of competing schools for your kids education (and the voucher would pay all of the tuition for some of the schools).

I think that the problem here is that you have a chip on your shoulder wrt rich people. Your anger is distorting your logical mind, rich people don't even have to come into this argument - even if everybody was middle class then school vouchers would still be the right thing to do.
