Request for Journal Software Recommendation

Hi,

I just bought my first Apple laptop few weeks ago and I was looking for a sofware to keep my journal. (It will be best if the software will be able to save the files in a common format such as ".xml, .doc" that will make it accessable by alternative programs.)

Any recommendations for that will be greatly appreciated....

What's wrong with just a word processor? That's what I use..

Well, if you must have a designated program, older versions of MacJournal are still perfectly usable and free:

What are you trying to do with these "journals"? Are they just basic text documents or do they contain images, outlines, etc? I'd guess either a word processor or as mentioned above one of the older MacJournals would work perfectly.

They will include mostly text, some images maybe audio and video as well.

There's a small application called viJournal that apparently is pretty nice and packed with features. It could definitely handle what you said you needed to put in your journals. Here is a link for it.

A Blog would be too Public. Being able to keep personal notes in a simple Journal you don't plan to make public is much easier.

There are ALL kinds of private blogs. Just as long as you don't make your password something stupid like, "KittycatButterflies!", it will be safe.

True, but they are not as feature rich, as Journler. With Journler I can organize everything into Folders, set up Keywords, export them as Text Files, and make Audio/Video recordings as well as access the Media Browser.

Hi Sebastian,

Thanks a bunch for the Journler recommendation. One thing that worries me is the save format of the files. You already mentioned that you can import them as text files. When I checked the Journler website and I see that it enables you do more then just storing text such as adding images, audio & video files, web links and use a folder system to keep track of things. When you export as text files what happens to attached images, audio & video files etc...? Are the links to them preserved or lost during export?

Also, what is the original save format for the Journler application?

When you save in Journler, it just saves it in the application. But if you export anything, you have an option of RTF, DOC, RTFD, PDF, HTML, and Plain Text. I never really exported anything before, but I just tried it with some random Videos, Audio, and Pictures. RTFD and PDF will preserve the pictures, but none of them is a good solution for exporting... unfortunately. You can also Export to your iPod I should mention, but outside of text, it wouldn't be useful.

On a brighter note, if you don't plan to export anything to share as a document that has a lot of Audio and Video links, it should work just fine, and 2.1 will be out soon which is supposed to get, well, too many new features to list is what the Author said, hopefully one is better support for Exporting and Preserving Documents. The only problem is that links to Audio and Video break when you export.

If you go to Journler's web site and click on the version 2.1 screenshot you might be looking at the Leopard UI. The buttons at the bottom of the screen look like the iTunes buttons and the scroll bars are still Aqua but instead of having a blue glow it is blue-gray which gives the screen a subdued look.

Perhaps if you need more, then DevonThink Pro will fit the bill, and it allows you to connect documents and files of any type.
