I would not pay Apple $200 to take out a 256MB chip and put in a 512MB. I added 512MB to my new 17" iMac and I think 784MB is enough for my needs.

    I just ordered a new iMac 17"!

Mac Mall offeres an extra 512MB DDR RAM for $40 installation fee. 768MB oughta do it, if you need more than that you'd probably go for a tower anyway...?

Also got the free printer and USB floppy, free after mail-in rebate, that is. Gotta love rebates.. or hate them: why can't I just get a discount on the spot, as opposed to cutting out UPC labels, filling out papers, and waiting a couple of months for a check?

mw. My MacMall order is "Out For Delivery" today and should arrive via UPS about 4:30 PM. I opted just for the extra RAM. Already have a printer and a floppy Superdrive (remember those?). It's gonna be a long day.........

    For desktops, internal bluetooth (especially at $50 a pop) is a waste of money... <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[oyvey]" /> </strong><hr></blockquote>

what makes it a POS? you have used it? i think not. if you have used one, explain your experiences and save the drama for your mama <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[oyvey]" />

Bluetooth was concepted to become ubiquitous like adb for mac or ps2 for pc, except both platforms geddit.

Also, bluetooth is all about convenience, no cables, no dongles... WHY would I want an external module? so my cat can walk by and break it off? so I can move it to my xxxmac then to my yyymac then to my zzzmac and then back to xxxmac? Internal is the best solution, completely unobstrusive. You can network your computers six ways from sunday but its still clunky to move data between pda's, phones and computers (too many serial port devices still). Bluetooth levels the playing field between PC's and Macs and their associated connectivity with these devices (incl kb, mouse, tablet). $50 is nothing for us who already pay the apple tax.

    thats my opinion

He doesn't have to have used it to have an opinion on it.

Seems reasonable, you can have it in your Pro Keyboard's free USB slot - you'd forget it's even there. Then if you take off for a week with your laptop, it can go with you if you like...

It's another option, and it makes sense. Fifty bucks is fifty bucks, and if you're not certain you need Bluetooth right away, maybe it's worth hanging onto your money for a while.

    It also increases your 1-2 day delivery time to 7-10 days. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

My iMac was delivered by UPS three hours earlier then I expected. Almost missed them and had to chase the truck back to my apartment complex. Set up everything and expect will spend tomorrow adding all my bookmarks to Safari. Need to load down Safari update and 10.2.4 as well as iMovie update. All is well now. I need to transfer my iTunes file. (I was able to transfer apps and documents files via firewire but am not sure how to to the same for iTunes and iPhoto for that matter.) Any suggestions?

The computer is fabulous and beautiful. No dead pixels.

<strong> [quote]Bluetooth was concepted to become ubiquitous like adb for mac or ps2 for pc, except both platforms geddit.</strong><hr></blockquote> and until apple bundles it like they did with the powerbooks instead of charging a ridiculous $50 for it that will not happen, at least not on this side of the fence...

$50 can be put to better places.... an external adapter is just one of those... it is much more versatile and cost effective especially now because it is NOT a standard YET....

That is my opinion.... but it is hard to argue that what I am saying is not true...

Does it have the SONY superdrive in it? Or the Pioneer? Macrumors and Macbidoule (or however you spell it I just type in hardmac) are reporting that the new 17" iMac superdrive is a sony and is even posted on the apple Discussion boards. If its the sony the drive is capable of burning DVD+R(W) as well all we need is software support.

Cool I wonder why they did this. But Im sure all will be revealed soon enough. When did you order it? Some people who orded it the day it came out got the pioneer drive. I wonder if it has to do with order/shipping time.

I need to ask - how do you know it's useless? I got bluetooth in my Mac - so did I get it because it's useless?

No - I got it so I can iSync with my bluetooth phone.

I ordered it the saturday after the updated iMAC announcement (so the 8th?). I dont know if anyone else has noticed this but it seems to burn CD's faster than my 24x external FW burner.

A@ron, I don't know what my Superdrive is yet.

I know I'm supose to be able to burn DVDs & CDs

Those are things I'm planning on dabbling with over the next few weeks.

    Andor,

I'm sure FedEx has an "estimated time of arrival" on their web site. They did when mine was on its way.

It'll be a while till it gets to you. Mine was stuck in Anchorage, Alaska for 3 days while it sat in customs. When it finally left, it was here in 10 hours or so. As for the drive, mine has a Sony, model number DW-U10A.

I just checked Sony's website. The drive they have that is DVD+/-RW is also a 24x cd burner and it's model number is DR-U500AX. Is there a way to check to see how fast your burner is?

    Check out this website:

    <a href="http://www.supermediastore.com/dru500a.html"; target="_blank">http://www.supermediastore.com/dru500a.html</a>;

Does this mean we have the multi-format, faster than advertized cd/dvd burner?

    Hey Big D,

Cool another Iowan! OK to answer a few things, inital reports seem to state that the drive is capable of the +R/W standard but the drive is crippled/disables by software or the firmware. Its possible that these features can be unlocked when enough people get their hands on them. There is no info in estimated delivery yet... Im saying monday for sure.

No estimated date, but now it's in Indianapolis

Speaking of which, why does it say the delivery location is Indianapolis? I live near Boston!

Below should be the current tracking info...

My new 17" iMac was purchased from MacMall and sent out of their Memphis, TN warehouse. I had an extra 512 RAM added. I got it in 3 days after ordering. As far as the Superdrive, how do I know if I have a Pioneer or Sony. No mention of brand name in System Profiler as far as I can see.
