Apple announced power supply swap program for MDD G4s

Those who can't stand the noise from the rev A One-Eyed Mikey (tm) here's a good news.



Apple will ship you the new power supply for free + handling fee.

But you will have to install the PM yourself and the installation process is kind of complex....

    If you dl the PDF it shows how to do it...easy for me as i have done this kind of thing on other macs......i hope this make it around %40 to %50 quiter..but from what i hear it's only %20....but still good. <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" />

    New Power Supply is rated lower, 360W instead of 400W according to the page. What gives?

    My hunch is that the power rating is the consumption rating and that the new power supply is more efficient, resulting in less heat which in turn implies smaller and quieter fans.

    God bless you Apple for finally recognizing and acting upon this issue. I will be exchanging my power supply (I replaced the fans already, but oh well). Now they need a heat sink exchance program.

    Apple is to be commended for "doing the right thing". It will do wonders for Apple's image and inspire more loyalty from users. Next they should own up to the paint bubbling defect on the early Titaniums.

    doing the right thing would be making this an AppleCare covered repair that would be done by dealers at absolutly NO cost to the customer.

    i dont think 20 bucks is too outrageous.... i mean, other than being loud, it wasnt a problem... it was a fault or anything...

    Why would you care? The noisiest part of the QuickSilver is the 60 mm fan next to the heatsink, followed by the 120 mm exhaust fan...



    That aside...

    Has any other company offered PSU replacements as the result of noise complaints?

    I wonder whether it's because the quieter power supply/fan introduced in the latest MDDs is identical in physical size and shape to that in the earlier MDDs, making it possble for them to be easily swapped. I wouldn't be surprised if the power supply in the QuickSilvers is a different size and shape, due to the different positioning of the optical and hard drives.

    If only Apple would acknowledge the <a href="http://discusssearch.info.apple.com/[email protected]@.3bb8aa5f"; target="_blank">design flaw in the iBook hinges</a> in a similarly correct way!

    The PSU in the QuickSilvers are ATX shaped.



    It amused me that somebody who didn't have a problem with his ower supply really wanted a new one...
