New PowerMac G4's boot only newest systems
Just installed one of the new 1.25Ghz DP powermacs. Quick machine, but with a new Apple "feature" that is a frustration. It will not boot into OS9. You can run classic mode under OSX, but not everything that runs under OS9 boot will run in classic mode. Further, I have a 3-month old OSX Install CD-set (10.2), and the machine will not that CD. So there is no way to run any OS earlier than the 10.2.4 that came with it (on a DVD no less) that I can figure out. The startup disk control panel (or whatever it's called in OSX) recognizes CD's with previous versions of OSX, and allows you to select them. But at boot time, the machine gives the little question mark mac, then proceeds to boot from the 10.2.4 on the default hard drive.
Anyone have any idea how to get around this "feature". We have classic applications that run much better with the machine booted into OS9.
Thanks for any advice.

Or on the "new" 800 MHz iMac. It's really no different from the old ones although it does only boot into OS X.

really? that BLOWS... at least on the other macs it made sense because of the possibilities of ApE and Internal BT which would have to be worked on to get support for 9....
In fact the only oddity seems that the "new" iMac 800 is not OS 9 bootable.

One of my old G4's has just died and need to get a replacement. No problem get a brand new shiny G4 - will be great, faster speed, more everything. Then realising it only boots into OSX.
I would say the majority of people who need to boot into 9 is because of Quark - sure it runs under Classic, but not as well and some features do not work. And before I get flooded with 'switch to InDesign threads', yeah we aso run that as well, but when your customers are using Quark you have no option.
Printers and graphic houses have real problems outputting from Quark in Classic to RIP's, hence the need to boot into 9. I could upgrade the RIP software, but can think of better ways to spend threee or four thousand quid.
It took me three hours trying to load USB printer drivers the other day on a non OS 9 booting 12" Powerbook as the CD that came with it automatically recognises the OS your are running and wont let you install any thing different (eventually had to copy it in Toast and delete all the non OS9 stuff).
This is a huge problem in the transitional period.

All of this 'hey Apple has been talking about this for months, where have you been hiding' does nothing to help people wih genuine problems out there. Sure I have known myself about this and have long been in favour of the move, until I ran into a real issue with it.

Apple is selling a Power Mac bootable in OS 9 and the Ti Book still boots in OS 9...look on the specific page w/ prices at the apple store and there is a link for OS 9 systems...
