I can't create a .dmg image using Disk Utility
Hi everyone. So i have an external HDD about 80 gigs or so. I want to create a back up (yes it is ghetto) using disk utility in this external. When rename it to "backup," i get an error message saying, " Can't create, 'backup.dmg' image resource is busy." Anyone know what to do?
and know I don't want to buy any software.
thanks

Use SuperDuper. I just tried it recently, it relatively easy to use, and I just back up my user files.

Thanks for the info, but it still doesn't answer the question, and I dont' want to purchase any programs.
Where do I get Super Duper from?
how much is it?

It's free for the first clone but that erases your external drive first. You can also use Carbon Copy Cloner, which is free:

The reason Disk Utility doesn't work is it seems to not like copying active files. When you are booted into the system, it can't do anything with the active system files so it can't image the drive. You'd have to boot from an external drive and image the drive that way. Programs like Superduper and CCC don't have this problem.
