Another newb question..

Actually, I have two:

1.Is there any place where I can do a "calculation" to see which Mac I need to replace my current PC. I'm looking at an iMac (24"). Just how fast is a Mac? Are they faster than a PC? The same speed? Slower? For example, my PC has 2 Gb of RAM. Do I need the same amount in a Mac? More? Less?

2.Is there any limit to the number of USB ports I can add, using a powered hub? I am using 5 right now (keyboard, mouse, 3 CH controllers) and I have 5 more open. I see the iMac has only 3? Can I add at least 4 more?

Thanks,

    Hey Rich,

    1. There isn't anywhere on apple's website to be able to compare a windows pc to a Mac. Overall you should see better performance from the iMac. What kind of processor do you have in your current PC? Unless it is a Core 2 Duo Intel chip, then the 24" iMac is probably going to be faster. If you are currently using 2 GB of RAM it would probably be worth upgrading the iMac to that configuration. I have the 2.16 C2D and 2 GB of RAM in my MacBook Pro and it is screaming fast. All of my PC using friends ogle over it every time I have it out. I don't think you would be disappointed.

    2. Yes you can add powered hubs to the iMac USB ports and add all that you will need.

I currently have a home-made system with an AMD FX-57 (2.8 Ghz) processor. I have 2 Gb of RAM, 2 GEForce 7900GTX's in SLI mode (512Mb each). WinXP SP2, 2 DVD writers and a Soundblaster 5.1. I do quite a lot of gaming, mostly flight simulators (I realise I will "lose" those) and adventure games (lots of those available for the Mac). I'm thinking that the iMac 2.33 would have it over the PC in processing power due to the dual core, Apple's tight integration with the OS, and the DDR2 RAM. The only question in my mind really is the graphics speed. I think it will be more than adequate - SLI didn't give me nearly the improvement I expected anyway .

    thanks,

You could use Boot Camp with SP2 and keep those flight simulators.

Don't worry about the USB connections, since the wired keyboard is already a USB hub, and you can add powered hubs as you would to any other computer. But I do recommend getting the wireless mouse and keyboard instead, with batteries+charger. This way you would have more freedom, a better mouse, and free USB ports for more expansion.

Sounds like you might keep your peripherals, though.
