I likely will get a next gen disk player whenever I...
a) Buy a next gen gaming console -- likely an XBox 360 or...
b) Buy a 1080p television.
Since neither of those are going to happen for a while yet, I'm not overly concerned. I'll just sit back and watch my upscaled movies on my tube HDTV while listening to it all on my Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound system and know that I got that whole system for way less than an LCD TV and next gen player would cost.
The PS3 is a fine BD player but Blu-ray is a boring spec that was incomplete from the start.

If you have a PS3 and like gaming...cool. If you don't care about gaming and want the best format you choose HD DVD. The content is going to level out. Disney's Bob Iger said he thought they'd end up supporting both formats and I still believe they will.

The Departed is the hottest new title and HD DVD has been selling more copies consistently despite the HD DVD version being 4 bucks more. Think about this now. Over 1 million BD players cannot beat out 300k HD DVD players. This shows you how truly abysmal the PS3 movie attachrate is.
If HD DVD hits 2 million players Worldwide by this year they will have all but solidified their future as it seems like it takes 3-4x the amount of PS3 sales to equal the movie purchasing power of HD DVD.
If you're a movie lover and you don't give a rip about either format ...keep your eyes peeled for Universal players. There are more coming that should be much better than the LG unit that is incomplete and expensive. I'd love to have a Universal player by the end of 2008 that functions very well and costs no more than $800 from a reputable Tier1 company. I think I'll have that as that is over a year away.

Nope. Digital Playground has already shipped 4 HD DVD tiles. Wicked is HD DVD only and Vivid will support both. In january the Adult Film industry pretty much about faced and HD DVD is looking strong there. I doubt the impact will be huge but it helps bring over perverted face sitters...ahem fence sitters.

No I'm just noticing the natural ebb and flow of this battle. When you look at things objectively it is now easier to see that Blu-ray was indeed almost a year behind and they've basically done a HD fillibuster to gain time. Their implementation of BD Java is late, they demoed no BD Live web/networking function a la Universal and Bandai Visual at CES 2007. They are finally adding a BD spec that contains dual video decoders and persistent storage.
These aren't the actions of a superior hardware platform. Many of you simply saw 50GB discs and got all hot n bothered and failed to look any deeper. With Disney and Fox exclusives Blu-ray is dead. You know it and I know it. So just imagine the concessions that they are getting. Sony is known for payola.
