New 10.1 Dev Tools Update?

Posted:

Version Tracker has posted a "10.1 Developer Tools" update that was supposedly released by Apple a few days ago. What are they talking about? Weren't the 10.1 Dev Tools released with the shrink-wrapped 10.1 product, or have they updated the tools since that time?

There is a new version of the Developer Tools. Unfortunately for me, they haven't qualified the new version with WebObjects, but I digress. The tools are currently available for download on the ADC site for Premier and Select members. They will be available to Online members some time next week. If you're an ADC member, the new tools will be sent with the January mailing.

Cool. Guess I'll have to sign up for the online (free) membership. Have a feeling it will be an unpleasantly large download though...unless they're just updated disk images or something like that. Do you know what kind of changes have been made? I didnt see anything about an update the last time I visited the Tools page on the ADC site (couple days ago when I originally posted).

Yeah. A co-worker downloaded it today, and it was about 210 Mb. Apparently it has AppleScript Studio though, which sounds really cool.

Paying ADC members (ie: me ) already get to download it. ADC Online members will get their hands on it on Monday, December 10. AppleScript Studio is in it. In the meantime, you can bring yourself up to speed on AppleScript Studio by reading the <a href="http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/macosx/CoreTechnologies/AppleScriptStudio/"; target="_blank">online documentation</a>.

Any changes to the Carbon or Cocoa API's or to IB or PB? Or is the whole point of the update the "ASS" ?

And from the above-noted description page:

"AppleScript Studio requires Mac OS X version 10.1.2"

    Hmmm... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Actually, I'm pretty sure it says that you need either Mac OS X 10.1.2 or Mac OS X 10.1.x with the December 2001 dev tools installed.

In other words, Mac OS X 10.1.2 is only required if someone wanted to run AppleScript Studio without the rest of the developer tools, although it's not clear at this point how AppleScript Studio is going to be distributed/sold independently of this dev tools package.

That sentence does make it fairly obvious that 10.1.2 is going to be released relatively soon, though; builds of it are already floating around on Carracho and Hotline.

I'd bet on 10.1.2 on or before MWSF.

I guess that makes sense. Hadn't thought of it that way. Still not looking forward to a 200+MB download...basically will take the whole day on a 56k line.

Well, the only thing I've really noticed so far is automatic code indention (off by default). I've been looking forward to this for a long time! Um... better code gen with the updated compiler... lots of new documentation...

Oh yeah, and some IB changes too... dragging objects out of containers without breaking connections, typed outlets, etc.

[Edit] Are you guys *sure* the tools available for download are any different than the ones that shipped with the full version of 10.1 back in September? I just signed up and on their OS X download page, the 10.1 developer tools are listed as being released on Oct 1. I already have those...

...is there another version that has been released that is designated as something newer (Developer Tools 10.2 or something)?

Ok. I think the deal is, that the newer tools AND the ones that came on the 10.1 CD are still called "Apple Developer Tools v10.1", but they are different builds. This according to some posts I read at version tracker last night. That 200+ MB download is not a pleasing thought ot me though...anyone know if a CD will be made available for $shipping?

The new Developer Tools are clearly marked to differentiate it from the October release. It's called "December 2001 Mac OS X 10.1 Developer Tools", and dated December 4. If you only see the old one, then you can't download the new one yet.

If you're an ADC premier, select, or student member, it'll be in your January mailing.

Thanks "KC". I figured as much regarding the CD. I'm not inclined to pay $500 for the wimpy amount of stuff you get for the Select membership. If it were $250 I'd consider it, but not $500. That's insane, considering how infrequently said members claim to get beta seeds and other such goodies.

Well, if you join just for the seeds, then $500 is rather expensive. But as a developer, the monthly mailings of the tool chest, reference library, system software, and other stuff are invaluable to me.

What kind of things do you get with said tool chests and libraries (for example) that don't already come with the Developer Tools CD and Documentation? 3rd Party stuff like the Omni Frameworks or something similar?

I believe you can buy the Dec 2001 Dev Tools for $20 if you are an online member.

You basically get Apple's entire developer web and ftp sites on CD, updated every month. All of the sample code, documentation, tech pubs, Apple tools (i.e. MakeCubic for QTVR) etc. without having to go online and download them. You also get full install CDs for every Apple system release for every language they support, which is valuable for doing international porting. The full installer CDs are very convenient when installing and changing OSs for testing (going from 8.6 to 9.2.1 to 9.1 etc.) You also get a hardware discount for each additional membership year following the first (got my Dual 800 for $2100).

Well worth it, for me at least.

So in other words, if I shelled out $500 come January for a Select Membership, in addition to all the developer related stuff, I'd be able to get what amounts to roughly $1000 off my next PM purchase (in January 2003, if I renew)? What is the Dual-800's standard cost? It's over $3000 isn't it? Are there restrictions as far as the discounts go (only certain hardware configs, have to buy a monitor too, etc)?

Naw, it was pretty stripped down when I got it. It was about $500 savings, so basically the second year was free. The savings varies from system to system, but it is about 30%. Don't become a member just for the discount! This is a new policy that was implemented a short time ago, and they may rescind it before you can take advantage of it (they have before). You can calculate your savings <a href="http://developer.apple.com/membership/usa.html"; target="_blank">here</a> (link about half way down the page).

You also have to pay sales tax at the Apple store.
