    iLife , .Mac and iWork will surely NOT be there.

    One thing to add is that these aren't pro products and that's why it is safe to say they won't be updated then. The NAB convention is purely a pro venue, so it's the wrong audience. I've never seen an Apple consumer product updated or announced at this convention.

    I'm going to guess

    FCP

    Mac Pro

    Leopard ship date announced

    That might be too much stuff though.

    that's exatly why i said it's easy to guess what's gonna be annouced.

    I dont think that's too much at all. Mac pro and FCP go hand in hand , and if FCP will be fully threaded Mac Pro with 8 cores will sell like hot cakes ( by then CS3 will be out as well so everyone and their grandma will be upgrading to Intel )

    Leopard ship date will be annouced well ahead of NAB if they're serious about shipping in the Spring.

Back in the mid-ninties when people thought "World Wide Web" was a good buzzword, it seemed right - you really don't need new hardware. But then they realized that people need computers to do all kinds of things. What if I want to write a paper and a roommate wants to watch TV. What will I do? What if I don't want to write things from a keyboard on my lap? What about the fact that it brings the work environment into the family and home environments. I'm sorry, this is a dead end.

    The future will follow the model we have with the Apple TV. One or two computers for the house, with different external components that work in a centralized network. There'll be some redundancy in function, but the pieces will be individually replaceable and flexible. The main computer will do a lot of the management and might multi-task, something for which multicore chipsets are especially good. It's possible the central computer will be headless and accessed by terminals, but it will most definitely not be integrated into the media center/TV.

    I can't completely agree with that.

    What I see is that everything is becoming computerized. At some point there will be no distinction between one device's interface and another.

    As all items in the house are networked, from the main computer to the toaster, we won't be able to distinguish where one begins, and the other ends.

    There should be no difference between the computer in the bedroom, the one in the kitchen, the one in the family room, etc. All of them will be able to access the same information, play the same content, and run the same games and programs.

    What you watch will depend on what you are doing. You may watch a cooking show in the kitchen while preparing a meal. You might watch a movie before bed in the bedroom. And perhaps sports in the family room.

    Or you might switch them up.

    Why should we say that one is different than the other.

    What if you want to work on your taxes on the large monitor in the family room while you are waiting for a program to come on?

    It's just convention that we do what we do where we do it. There isn't any fixed and definitive reason WHY we have to do it that way.

    Technology has gone far beyond the bad old days of WebTv, and it will go far beyond what we have now.

    You guys reported previously that they were going to have a special event on February 28, then in March, and now in April... can someone provide us with proof? I can't see that event posted at apple.com.

    That fact that Macworld.com reported it first is proof enough for most.

    I wondered about that when I read the article. I'm not sure how much the NAB crowd really cares about iLife, but it would make a good venue for unveiling a very pro-style iLife suite and talking about how advanced but still user friendly the features are.

    Plus, it gets iLife out of the way of Leopard, which Apple may want to feature all alone at launch even if iLife is included.

    I see five major announcements on the horizon:

    * music: widescreen iPod and The Beatles

    * movies: Warner Brothers

    * hardware: new Macs

    * pro apps: FCP

    * Leopard

    * iLife/iWork

    I can't imagine we won't see pro apps and maybe hardware at NAB, but I think we're going to get at least one more event before WWDC to take care of some of these other things.

    I would love to see an integreated Apple TV. Just plug it in and go; you're computer does everything else. It's basically an integration of two things that are already on the market, and Apple could do that very well with a large markup and change the rules of the TV game by having a fully integrated TV and its on content distribution system. No cable box, no satellite, no nothin'. Just your Mac and your TV. Macworld '08 at the earliest.

    You're joking, right? Ernie Ball MusicMan unveiled their 20th anniversary Stingray 5 and a new line of accessory products. Warwick introduced a new line of preamps and amps. MarkBass unveiled their new Classic 300 amp. Epifani released their series 2 UL line of cabinets, Euphonic Audio came out with a 6 pound 300W amp, Sadowsky put out a new headphone amp, updated Kustom amps and cabinets, Trace Elliott revived by Peavey, Peavey putting out new lower weight tube amp plus 810 cabinet and that's all I remember from the crazy amount of new product releases.

    Of course, I guess if you're not a bass player none of this matters. If you are, NAMM is the show to check out.

    That was quick... wasn't MediaFork only a few weeks old?

    I am proud to announce that HandBrake and MediaFork have now officially joined as one. Many thanks to titer and the entire MediaFork development and support staff for making this possible.

    The next public beta release will be called HandBrake - most likely, version 0.9.0 beta 1 (reflecting the many new features that will be available). This is expected to be released in the next 2-3 weeks.

    I would like to sincerely thank our developers, beta testers, support staff, Donovan at CityNet, and above all titer for all of the work they?ve done to make the transition possible. Thank you all very much!

    LOL I stand corrected. I have always been jealous of the goodies that guitarists get every year..sigh. Guess I'd better stop procrastinating and learn how to play.

    I would never buy a "desktop replacement" laptop. They are too heavy, noisy and energy inefficient to be at all useful as a portable computer. I would much rather buy a subportable (a 12" MacBook Pro?)
