run windows off external HD for parallels

i have a macbook running 10.4.8 and i was wondering what i need to do in order to install windows onto an external hard drive, and use that hard drive to run windows on my macbook with parallels desktop through firewire. i know theres topics about this, but the questions have been more specific and dont actually tell how to get started, and thats what I'd like to know. thanks!

    One way you could proceed is to install OS X on the drive first, then leave it's partition really small when installing Windows via Boot Camp. I don't know any other way of doing it... Drive needs to be firewire, I believe.
