A realtime DV card ? Are you using it for offline editing with the DV codec or is DV good enough for broadcast in your area ?
The realtime cards give you a preview to an external monitor (NTSC or PAL). FCP only allows realtime previews to the desktop. Both options - the RtMac and the real-time effects in FCP - need to be rendered before going out to tape.
The RtMac also gives you composite in, but the quality of the video is very ordinary.

As far as I know, the realtime effects in FCP3 are for DV footage only, which is 720x480, and doesn't support broadcast resolution of 720x486. It's a ?ucker that this is missed by a mear 6 pixels, but I think Apple did this so they wouldn't scare off real-time card makers.
Can you outline which Rt Cards you may be speaking about ?
Most guys producing for broadcast simply edit at DV and then get a transfer to Beta-SP or Digi-Beta. Obviously the quality is never better than the 5-1 compression of DV.

I agree DVCAM is better looking than SP. The problem comes when you capture and work with DV, titling, effects, compositing. The best way is still to capture DV and then work uncompressed via a voodoo or igniter board then go back out to DV. The quality is never any better than the original DV but the effects and titles won't have the often seen jaggies etc

If you're talking about doing real-time uncompressed video, you will need to look at the <a href="http://www.pinnaclesys.com"; target="_blank">cinewave</a>, the <a href="http://www.digitalvoodo.net"; target="_blank">voodoo</a> card or the <a href="http://www.auroravideosys.com"; target="_blank">igniter</a> card.

My humble opinion is DVcam Sony is better than betacamSP, in the field. Yes, we broacast in DVcam for 25% now, 75% in 2002.
