10.3 - Panther Needed!

Hi Folks -

Apparently even the best of us need help and guidance from time to time. I am working on my parent's computer, an iMac DV Graphite 2001. Tonight I disassembled it to clean it up and upgrade components on it. I borrowed a HD that had 10.3 already on it to test to see if it would work on the system (Which currently has 10.2 installed on it) and it worked better than it did with 10.2!

So I want to upgrade - but cannot find any working copies available for sale from Apple. I gather they dont sell past versions, so what other places sell reliable, legitimate copies of OS X?

Thanks!!

Apple sells only the current OS X version. It has been always that way.

You can look at your local (or... not so local) retailers if something remains (doubtful); otherwise there is ebay for such things.

His machine is quite old and I am not sure if it will run better Tiger than Panther. Yes, Tiger is better optimized overall but it puts some extra load on the graphics side and memory in general. In more recent machines you won't notice, but in an iMac with just 16 MB VRAM (the bare minimum for Quartz Extreme) and 256(?) MB RAM the difference may be noticeable.

Exactly, I am concerned about performace degradation if I put on Tiger. I do have Tiger install disks here, but it will not accept the system specs to install. Panther was VERY fast and smooth on that machine, I so wanted to toss the old hard drive and keep the test drive, but I probably would have gotten my ass kicked.

Yeah, I agree with PB. Take a look on eBay. Or Amazon. They have some second hand copies here.

That's good. I had a look at ebay and there are several Panther disks selling, priced at a fraction of what Amazon asks. Of course it is up to you to decide which one you trust to do business.

I actually have my eyes on a couple auctions ending within the next 48 hours. I like the prices and the feedback is promising. I hope.....

    hi,

did u check with apple store near by.they wont be having copies but they may be able to guide u,from where u can get one.

why take all these trouble when u can go for a mac os x tiger installation.which is the most superior OS avilable.

the system requirement for tiger is 256mb ram and 3gb harddisk free space.please check ur system configuration.

u can get a tiger disc for $129 from any apple store.of course u should have a dvd reader.ow u can buy a tiger dvd and

change it to a cd by apples media exchange program.i work on tiger and trust me its the best.u will love it.so y a panther when u can have a tiger

    regards,

I know this isn't a necessarily LEGIT way to do it, but... you could use Disk Utility to make a disk image of your friend's drive and save it on a network drive and then restore the image onto your own hard drive.

Ya, its not legit, but it would work.

    That brings up another question.

?? If Apple's not selling new copies of 10.3, then is it really pirating if you use a copied version of it on your system ??

It reminds me of trying to BUY CD Albums of artists in Europe but you can't find any dealers who sell the album in North America. Some of them can't even be had on ebay or amazon of other countries, or the cost of importing is out of this world.

    Cheers all.

Thanks trustapple - I know all about Tiger and I love it, but it would create such a resource strain on the old iMacs that it wouldnt be feasible to put it on there. I think Panther is the Highest I would like to put on it.

Freudian - Good idea, and once I figure out the answer to your question about pirating, etc... if its no longer in production, I just might give it a whirl. I did use Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate my old 160 GB HD when I upgraded to 500 GB, and it worked beautifully....but I need to experiment on the old drives. Again, I want something that will not get me in trouble legally - and still allow me to fully update it
