Weird article. It starts out with the implication that Apple "crippled" Virtual PC for OSX, but then the guy goes on to say Apple gave them tons of help getting Virtual PC going on OSX. Sounds like the guy is just making excuses for why VPC is slower in OSX.

[quote]Another issue for Virtual PC 5 is that it is a Carbon application, which means it is subjected to the processing overhead that all Carbon applications are subjected to.<hr></blockquote>Okay, now this part really pisses me off. Yes, some Carbon apps perform poorly because they're shoddy ports, but there is no "overhead" that the author refers to.

Geez, Connectix is spreading the FUD pretty thick. :o

Yeah this is just connectix being apologists for their own lack of detail more than likely. I have seen many carbon apps that are coded right work real fast.

    This isn't a Apple problem?

Ever noticed how fast Appleworks runs?

I could respect these guys if they just said "Emulating Windows in any MacOS is really tough, and it's harder in OSX. It's taking us a ton of effort to get decent Windows speeds in Virtual PC for OSX, but we're working on increasing performance as soon as possible."

Yes! I much prefer commitment and determination over naive complaining and passing the buck. This is why the Engineers do not talk to people!

    Connectix needs someone like Office Space's <a href="http://brad.project-think.com/downloads/ofsp-dohere.wav"; target="_blank">Tom Smykowski</a>.

    <a href="http://www.macwindows.com/"; target="_blank">Connectix has changed their tune</a>.

[quote] The newly updated white paper focuses on the idea that things are different in OS X, instead of saying that preemptive multitasking is a negative feature. "We [developers] didn't know how to schedule in a preemptive world," said Schmucker.

Mitch Cipriano, Connectix vice-president of product management, added "Mac OS X is a new system. The way you optimize an application in OS X is different than in previous Mac OS versions. Developers are just getting up to speed."

Does this mean that Mac OS X applications will some day obtain the "unprecedented performance" due to "industrial-strength UNIX," as Apple claims on its Mac OS X home page?

"We believe OS X apps have the potential to be faster than OS 9" said Bereskin. "We are convinced that application developers can optimize their products for superior performance in OS X."

However, the Connectix white paper still says that "Virtual PC will never be as fast on Mac OS X as it is on Mac OS 9."

When pressed about the finality of the word "never," Cipriano took a less pessimistic tone. "'Never' is probably an overstatement."

As I said before: [quote]Lies, lies, lies....

excuses, excuses, excuses.<hr></blockquote>At least Connectix is smart enough to admit they were were being idiots.
