Civ III updates

I think I'll buy Civ III for the Mac as soon as the school year is over. I'm not letting a game interfere with my studies.

I looked on the website and can only find reference to the Winblows version. Is there a separate site for Mac users, or what? is it not even officily released for Mac yet? I ask because I rarely use a 1.0 of a program, I always wait for the .1 or .2 so that bugs and balance issues are adressed.

No updates... yet. But there will be, because somebody broke the music code, and there are a couple minor flaws as well.

All in all, though, it's very stable (no crashes yet...) and seems to be a very quality piece of software.

Just a couple things:

1) You must have a monitor capable of 1024 x 768 resolution. Preferably higher.

2) You WILL be addicted, so make sure you've got everything important out of the way before you take off the shrinkwrap.

I played Civ I, II, and Alpha Centauri, but I've actually been pretty disappointed with Civ III. If I had the choice again, I wouldn't purchase it.

Since someone pointed out that you can get Civ III for $27.90 I am debating whether to buy it. My only concern is perfomance. I am using a 600Mhz iBook with 384Mb of RAM and OS X. Has anyone used it in such an environment? If it's not good on my iBook I will get the PC version and use it on my Duron 900 desktop which I'm sure will perform beautifully... I just like the idea of being able to play it when I'm away from home

I run civ3 on my 450Mhz Cube. I do have 1.5GB of ram, and a faster hd though ... and civ3 runs pretty acceptably. The key, i think, is in the 'Use quartz for text rendering' setting. With this setting on, civ3 lets quartz draw the text, and it does look very very nice! However, it makes the game almost unplayable, its so slow. So slow that i thought it hung at certain points. Turning this setting off makes the game so much more playable. It still chugs in a very few parts, or when you have a lot of units in one place, but there are a few other animations you can turn off to make it a bit more playable ... Its a pretty fun game, all in all.

Oh, I also have a geforce2Mx ... not sure how much is helping, but its probably better than the rage128 i had ...

Performance on an iBook should be fine (works great on my Ti PB 667), but all the Civ games are really annoying to play on laptops.

See, the easiest method of moving your pieces around on the map is with the keypad. Unfortunately, you also need the rest of the keyboard for useful shortcut keys. So when you activate the keypad on laptops, it turns the rest of the keyboard off. To play effectively, you have to switch back and forth between keypad and keyboard. Bummer.

Of course, there are other ways of moving (mouse, err... trackpad, 'go to' locations, etc.) but none work quite as well as the keypad.

I have a Pismo, and I always just use the "fn" key to activate the keypad for that keystroke only. You don't have to use it with the number lock.

So just hold 'fn' when you play Civ, and you can move stuff around just fine.

Well I spent the day debating whether to buy myself a copy of Civ III and I just decided I couldn't resist it at $27.90 from <a href="http://www.gogamer.com"; target="_blank">www.gogamer.com</a> so I went to order it and what do you know it went up to $39.90 during the day <img src="graemlins/surprised.gif" border="0" alt="[Surprised]" /> Guess that's what I get for procrastinating.
