Yes, their "tradeoff" was getting to the superphone market in time to be an early leader at the expense of the computer market, which they think they can't lose any market share in because of their devoted users.

If anyone thinks the stated reason is the real one they're naive. That is a statement to investors trying to put a positive spin on a bad announcement. I am 100% sure some of what is in the terse statement is true. It has to be or Apple opens itself up to lawsuits. But that does not mean they told the entire truth in all it's warts. There is no requirement to cast everything that way.
Just think what does it mean: “…Apple claims the iPhone is the most advanced mobile device to ever ship and as a result they had to borrow resources away from the Mac OSX team….”?
It can mean only one thing: Apple is not able to finish in time neither of them, not iPhone, not Lepoard. Apple is clearly on its way down and accelerating.
I'd rather Apple take a temporary hit on stock price than ship a buggy 10.5 and undergo the same jeers that Vista is getting.
The iPhone must be delivered functional and without a hitch. It is the 1st generation of its kind and Apple knows what happens when you ship new technology with bugs (Newton). First impressions are lasting.
Most users are fine with Tiger. It's not even two years old and is stable and full featured for most. Delaying Leopard 4 months will only manifest in a more mature launch with working features and safety.
The iPhone is critical. It is the first large scale mobile platform running a subset of OS X. Apple simply must nail this launch or the iPhone could go down the wrong path and be ignored. Delay Leopard ...it's the least critical launch of the two IMO.

In an integrated computer hardware and software company the operating system is an absolute priority. But that's the point and you are right: Apple did not drop the "Computer" from its name just for joking. The priorities are changing and Apple steadily extends its field of influence. Macs are still first class citizens today, but we don't know tomorrow.
I think that the events of this year are just a glimpse of things to come.
I find it amusing that analysts are coming out now saying that Apple is stretching itself too thin. One came out to say that they are displaying a new type of behavior by delaying products. First the AppleTV was late to market and now OS X. I think that what's really happening is that because of the success of the iPod and the stock price, this is the first time that analyst really care about how Apple launches a product.
Everyone here has followed Apple and its releases for some time. When did they last have a product launch that wasn't delayed? Mac Pros that got pushed back week after week. Something would be said to be available at the end of the month, and then have a six week shipping time. This is nothing new, but rather just the status quo. We've all just gotten used to it that I don't think it should shock us, but some apparently are under the impression that this is the first time Apple has ever delayed a product. Wasn't the new iPod shuffle delayed?
By the way, don't think that at the end of June you'll be able to waltz into an Apple store and buy an iPhone either. That will get pushed back to July probably. Then there will probably be a delay in shipping and supplies will be limited. It won't be until August that most people will probably be able to get their hands on one.
