I waiting for the next generation 24" iMac with completely new design, and with my imaginary multi-touch keyboard to replace both keyboard with keys and mouse. I'm also waiting for a completely redesigned MacBook Pro with new keyboard, LED backlight, magnetic latch and radically new case, maybe a dual display with no keys at all possibly, if they come up with a way to make the battery last such a situation.
The delay changes my plans b/c i was planning to change all the computers at my house to Macs during the summer so my parents could have some time to adapt (as well as me). But now i'll probably just get sometime in December. I'm flexible enough to have the delay destroy my plans, but I really am annoyed
I've been waiting for a Santa Rosa MBP. I've had this 1.25 GHz PB since Sept '03. If the SR MBP comes out in June and looks much like what I have now, I might as well wait until fall and see if a totally new model comes out. I'm hoping an updated version will be out in November but I'm afraid it might not come out until January. At this point, I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
Well now I'm in a pickle. I was planning to wait for Leopard at WWDC to get a MacBook to go with my Intel iMac. But October is too long to wait; I have things to do with a laptop now and in the next few months.
If Santa Rosa is expected to be put in the MacBooks (not just Pro) then I'll wait till WWDC and get one then. If there's no MacBook refresh by WWDC then I'll grab one then. It'd be nice to know how much of Apple's hardware engineering resources have been working on the Apple TV and iPhone, which might push a laptop refresh till Sept or Oct.
Well, I'm waiting for the iMac casing redesign to buy a new computer... is there any way to edit the poll to include that sort of thing?
Basically, i'm waiting till october when leopard comes out. i figure there'll be new hardware by then, leopard will be out, and mabye a new case design for the macbook pro. i'm in no real hurry anyways, i want it for school, and i can wait a month after school, probably just get it for christmas or something.
I was waiting for Leopard, now I'm not sure. I've just got CS2 with the CS3 upgrade when it comes, so I won't be getting a new Mac very soon, still probably June at the earliest anyway, but I have got time now to see what happens and what gets released over the next few months. My G4 is running ok for now, so not in a great hurry, I'll probably wait for either the Santa Rosa systems in June or the new Mac Pro systems at the end of the year (with Leopard).
I am ready for a new desktop, and was hoping to get one with Leopard in June/July. What I am wondering now, and hopefully some of you can advise, is whether Apple has typically come out with new models after new operating system releases, that make better use of the new OS features?
i, like many, was waiting till june for leopard before buying a new macbook, hoping to enjoy it over the summer before school restarted. however, now that that's being postponed, and the santa anna chips will be in at around the same time, i'm considering waiting. my current computer is an agonizingly slow 1999 snow white imac with 500 mhz, 128 mb ram, 40 gb hd, usb 1 ports, and not even cd-burning abilities. its original os, i think, was 9.8, and i've been too afraid to upgrade from 10.3. as it is, it can barely run two applications at the same time.
anyway, it'll hurt me to spend the summer without a fully functional computer. my question is: is the wait worth it for me? upon purchacing, i'm looking at maxing out the ram and buying a nice, large portable external hard drive, seeing as this new computer will probably last me about 4 years. my question is weather the wait is worth it. what do you guys think?

You're closing in on me, mate. My record is going from 1985 to 1994 with the same computer (a Mac Plus). Currently, I have a nigh-six-year-old 867 G4 tower. (It seemed to be crapping out on me this winter, but has apparently exorcized whatever demons were possessing it.)
I was pissed about the Leopard delay, because we were waiting to buy a Santa Rosa MacBook (or MBP) with Leopard (and iLife 07) installed. But I realized that the only thing that really changed is that I now had a choice. I could either still buy a Santa Rosa in June, and pay $69 (edu discount) in Oct when Leopard ships, or wait until Oct to get the same machine with Leopard installed (after June, there probably won't be a laptop HW update until at least MWSF). The question then is: Is having four months of use of a new computer worth $70? My answer is yes.
Bottom line: since you've gone so long with the same machine, and know--hardware wise--which machine you'll get, go ahead and get the machine in June and buy Leopard for $69 in October.

You deserve it.
will the may/june santa rosa iteration be just for macbook pros, or for the normal macbooks, too? i'm not in a position to plop down 2 grand for a system.
The danger with buying now is that updates are so overdue on everything, when they do bring em out they'll lower the price to make them more appealing to those of us who've been forced to shell out in the interim. That means the sell-on price of a system bought now won't be worth jack, plus you won't be viable for a free Leopard upgrade in October. It's so frustrating!
Although a June/July release of Leopard would definitly have influenced my purchase decision, ultimately I am waiting for two hardware updates to the current MBP line.
1) The new LED backlit display
2) Santa Rosa platform (or a faster CPU and FSB, with Robson caching)
If the new LED backlighting appears without any upgrade to the CPU then I may wait until Leopard. If the new LED backlighting appears with some form of a platform upgrade then I will probably buy at that point.
If I have a new system before Leopard arrives it merely means that I will essentially be getting a hardware upgrade because Leopard will be able to more efficiently use the processors.
Like several other posters here, I do audio recording/editing so a newer system is going to help out a lot. Currently I've been running on a PB G4 1Ghz, it runs most of my needed software well, but bogs down when working on some larger sessions. As well, the reason for waiting as long as possible for a new system is that I can probably get around 4 years of work out of a brand new system before the software coming out needs higher specs to run.
Well, I finally bit the bullet yesterday after the Apple special event and ordered the eight-core Mac Pro with the 30" Cinema Display, ATI 1900, and a 750GB hard drive. As soon as the new Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000s are available in the retail channel, I want to stripe two of those in the new Mac Pro.
Today I'm ordering 8GB of RAM from Other World Computing and will take advantage of their factory memory-rebate offer.
This new workstation is replacing a six-year-old Power Mac G4 with a single 733MHz processor, 1.25GB of RAM, 22" CRT, 19" CRT, two 60GB internal hard drives, and two external hard drives. We certainly got a lot of use from our old workstation. And it's still a fantastic machine. The only area where it really gets slow for us is when editing layered 16-bit files in Photoshop CS2 with iTunes playing music in the background.
I'm really looking forward to being able to run Photoshop CS3, Lightroom, Bridge, Entourage, multi-tabbed Safari, and have iTunes playing music all at the same time. I can only assume that the new eight-core Mac Pro with 8GB of memory will zip right through those same Photoshop files.
Our next major hardware purchase will probably be a MacBook Pro sometime at the end of 2008. I hope this new Mac Pro serves us well for four to five years.

Make sure you open and pay that credit card bill before your wife gets to it. Ouch!!

There's no way to tell. If there is a difference, the MBP's would probably get them first. But again, there's no way to tell.
Not that the past is a guarantee of the future, but the MacBooks and the MBPs both got Core2Duos at the same time. Most of us were expecting the MBPs to get them first, and for Apple to bleed the MBs dry a bit first. They did the right thing though because those C2D MacBooks sold like hotcakes (actually, probably better than hotcakes, which don't really sell that well anymore...).
Personally, I am expecting both to get Santa Rosa at the same time. But I've been wrong once or twice before. If there is a difference, it should only be because of supply constraints. Expect those to be worked out within a month or so.
Wait for the Santa Rosa MacBook (but not for Leopard). It'll be worth it.

You could probably save quite a few cycles by leaving the 733 as your Entourage/Safari/iTunes machine. Leave the 19" crt connnected and use the 22" lcd along with the new 30" on the MacPro.

I'm definetly going to get one when they update them, even if w/out Leopard.
I just don't know whether to wait 2 months or just get one now
At WWDC's do they normally announce new or updated iMacs?

if you have a computer that works fine now just wait. i too long for a new mac, but have to wait 6 months ...probably more.
Thanks.
