Why is AOL for Mac OS X version 5.0...

...when the Windows version is 7.0?

I recently upgraded my grandfather's Rev B iMac with OS X, Appleworks, and AOL. AOL is version 5. And that's the official one! I don't know if its features are equivalent to Windows v 5 or Windows v 7, but I don't like it.

Makes me feel as if AOL doesn;t care.

They don't care about Mac users. They really should have added more options, but I'm hopping to get rid of AOL at some point so I don't really mind.

It sucks. The thing I want most is Away Messages. I have to use AIM if I want them. Windows users have has had that feature for close to two years I think.

give them a break. they aggressively persued an OS X port much quicker than anyone anticipated and they keep it a good solid version.

And honestly, you ain't missing much but bloat over the new windows versions

The point of this thread is lost on me. Why would someone want AOL?

AOL is assnuggets. Plain and simple.

yet it is the most popular web service and is crucial for a successful platform. without it, OS X would not be used by many people, most notably the consumer market

You're right about them porting the software to OS X quicker than people expected, but still there's no reason to be 2 version behind. The OS 9 software should've at least had 6.0 2 years ago.

We're missing some mail features and away messages since we're stuck with 5.0.

Only thing good that AOL produced was AIM..and I wouldn't use it if Adium had file-transfer capabilities. (which I understand will never happen cause of AOL's "m$"'s mentality!! grrr )

Really, the big question is: Should the Windows version be at 7.0? It seems that AOL defies convention by making EVERY release a x.0 increment. And everytime, they have some security problem. It sucks and no one should use it.

Hopefully as Cable and DSL catch on as the better way to surf the web, AOL will become yesterday's news.

AOL sucks anyway. I am currently in the 45 day trial period (I'm not keeping it), and I am checking my email at aol.com because I hate the app so much.

I doubt it. I have a cable modem and use AOL's Bring Your Own Access plan ($9.99 for current users, $14.99 for new members). I'd love to get rid of AOL, but my dad doesn't want to so that's why I still have it. I know a lot of people who do this so I doubt AOL will go anywhere anytime soon.

Probably the same reason the Mac OS X version of AIM is version 4.5. I can't have the "Talk" feature and I can't see when I type a smilie face (not that its a huge deal but I do like to have the talk feature). AOL can kiss my @$$~!

same here although I am trying my best to get my mother to ditch it now that we all have mac.com accounts with most of our good mail going to them

Use Adium: <a href="http://www.adiumx.com"; target="_blank">http://www.adiumx.com; It's hands down better than AOL's official OSX client. It doesn't have talk either, but it does have graphical smilies. Most of the things that Adium lacks, it does so because of AOL's third party restrictions. Adium is a great app and it is almost constantly being improved.

Also, why can't we see color profiles? That really annoys me too.
