What is the best audio editing software on the market? Cost isnt really an object with in reason <$400

I need to rip live music off a minidisc player. Seperate it into tracks and be able to post it on the web as clips and also burn to cd.

All input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Short of the ultra-professional stuff that costs a boatload, I'd say Peak from BIAS Inc. Think they have a Mas OS X version now as well, though their naming / bundling schemes are confusing so read up on their stuff first.

Download <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=9136&db=mac"; target="_blank">Pro Tools Free</a>. It's the best audio recording/editing/mixing software on the planet and this free version is very powerful and will more than meet your needs.

for what OS? 9 or X?

For 9, Peak or Protools are good.

For X, nothing i've tried is good at the moment, though Peak looks promising.

Do not touch Felt Tip Sound Studio X with a 200 foot insulated pole! It has destroyed a number of my recordings with crazy bugs in the recording and file saving code, and the author won't agknowledge the problems on his site.. Bad situation - don't touch this software.

Unfortunately, I must mirror robo's comments. Sound Studio X is the devil's bane. It has inexplicably destroyed several of my audio files too. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

I'm counting the days 'til Pro Tools is ported to X.

Guys I appreciate all the input.

I decided to try both Peak and Protools Free.

So far I am impressed with both but I think Protools may be the winner. I currently use both X and 9, for all the same reasons everyone else is using both.

I dream for the day that I can run Photoshop and Flash MX in X and quark but we all know about them and getting this product ported to X, I figure we'll all see that in about 2 years. Quark is like Microsoft an S load of hot air and delivering sub-par programs

I just took another look at Peak, and i think i might go ahead and buy Peak LE for OS X. I'm determined to do my recording/editing in OS X. I haven't used Peak for 4 years or so, but i trust the Bias people to release good software. I'm still trying to get a refund from Lucius Kwok, the guy who wrote Sound Studio, since i don't think it's fair that i paid for software that doesn't work!
