Well, it seems yEnc has become the compression format of choice on News Groups. Here's info on yEnc:

So I downloaded MT Newswatcher for OS 9 and OS X.

But I am clueless as to how all this works. Whenever I select a thread with any yEnc encoded file attached I get textual garbage...could somebody give this simpleton some step by step advice here? I would really appreciate this...

yEnc compatible readers for Mac......

yEnc is a binary compression I believe...

I use Thoth... and just choose Extract Binaries and they come down fine

Well, I got some help and I thought I'd pass it on...

"MT-Newswatcher uses helper applications (like browers do) to decode downloaded binaries.

Go to the preferences section and specify which apps you want to use for which type of compression scheme.

I think Rosetta is the only yEnc decoder at the moment. Although to use it with MT it would be wise to pay the shareware fee because you keep getting the -This app is unregistered- dialog box. It's kind of a pain.

Thoth decodes yEnc without helper apps and is very similair in operation to MT.

There is a BIG stink in all th NG's about yEnc. Caught alot of people off-guard. But it does seem to produce smaller file sizes and that helps posters who, like me, upload speed is throttled by our cable providers."

    Soooo...

I will either get Rosetta or Thoth. I have heard that all newsreaders and email clients with news access will have this built in for the future. I think OE for Windows already has it. Hopefully, but probably not, OE and Netscrape 6+ for Macs will have it soon.

As far as the posters on newsgroups starting to use this whole yEnc thing... They should wait until it IS standardized for everyone and stop thinking they are so "cutting edge" with this. But they are mostly a Windows contingency who usually do get the next big thing before Mac users. And usually pretty damn superior about it...
