Time for Office v.X update?

Hey, it's been what, 5 months since Office v.X came out? Isn't it about time for a service pack? we've got a host of pesky bugs and performance issues to be addressed. Not looking for perfection, but carbonised apps seem to have an obligatory .1 or .0.1 release that focuses on performance. Time for one for Office! Do you think we're waiting on final Palm software so they can roll a conduit into it?



And hey, where is AW 7? Seems like that is now "overdue" as well.....

    As for the Office X update, I have to agree. There are some really basic bug fixes that are needed (screen refresh bugs, window position memory and things of that nature). I don't recall how long it was before MS released SR1 for Office 2001. Thinking it was close to a year?

    I was expecting something Office related at MWTokyo. The Office 2001 service pack did come close to a year after release, I think, but in that case the product had fewer obvious bugs - it was more of a polish of Office 98 than a much re-worked release, which Office v.X was given the need to carbonize. given that, i assumed we'd see updates sooner.

    Well, I wouldn't associate the availability of an Office Service Release with a trade show. Microsoft doesn't normally draw attention to their updates, so it could be here at WWDC, or it could be here next week. The timing will be more or less random if I had to guess. I think we'll see it shortly after the release of 10.2 probably - as will be the case for Adobe's updates (I bet they'll even update Illustrator again). Not a recompile like was talked about in another thread, just taking advantage of whatever under-the-hood stuff they can. Who knows...maybe even BlueTooth in the case of Office.

    You'll probably see an Office update when their Palm conduits are ready. Makes sense, no? So Palm Desktop release and OSX Office update at the smae time.



    I would be very surprised if Adobe updates Illustrator again. Adobe seems much more interested in charging for paid upgrades than fixing bugs these days. I'm not even sure what 10.0.1 fixes--still slow as sh*t and the redraw bug i still there. Poster child for lack of Adobe bug fixes: GoLive 5.

    That's true. I heard a lot of bad stuff about the GL5 situation. As far as Illustrator, the engineers have acknowledged that redraw bug hasn't been fixed but that they *are* in fact working on it - hence my suspicion there will be a 10.0.2 in the next few months. I would be very surprised if all of the Adobe apps didn't get at least one bug fix / performance tweak given that they're all 1.0 apps in a sense. Plus I think Apple's updates will have a part in this dot release cycles too.



    I don't deny it's unlikely there will be any feature changes or additions, but I do think they'll do a better job of bug fixing and small speedups this time around when it comes to their dot releases.

    FWIW, Microsoft's Internet Explorer has been practically the same buggy crap for 18 months... no major updates and only "minor" updates that seemingly do nothing to address the outstanding bugs and performance issues.



    I expect the same treatment regarding Office:Mac.

    The most irratiting bug to me is printing letters which contain images with white backgrounds, the backgrounds come out light grey. This problem does not exist in Word 2001.



    I do not expect Palm conduits to come out before they release conduits for Pocket Windows.

    Now that the Palm software for OS X is done, this probably bodes well for us...hopefully we'll see a decent update in the next couple months.

    Has anyone else experienced this problem with Office X?



    We have multiple TiBooks running on a network with an OSX server. People log in remotely using NetInfo. Office X is installed locally on each TiBook. I have witnessed at least 8 kernel panics when people are running an Office suite app or just after they quit one. People tell me this is a very bad thing, but I have seen no other reference to it elsewhere. Perhaps it is related to the remote log-in? Before installing Office X we had not kernel panics, and as long as people don't run Office, there are no kernel panics.

    Office has an interesting omission that seems likely intentional: no share calendar and contact capability (otherwise, why wouldn't they have added this capability by now).

    However, without these, the application suite, especially Entourage, is much less than it could be. I'm surprised some third party hasn't added this capability, if MS won't.

    I don't know if it was hyperbole, but to make the claim of "1000 changes, etc." makes me think two things:



    1. This update will come after 10.2 is released (to make sure it works well with the final release of said system)



    2. Can you guys think of 1000 features that need tweaking? Wonder if it will be downloadable....

    It's a good bet several of those "1000 changes" are little things like sharper looking icons and buttons, as well as some new gizmos. As for speed, Office X is about the only OS X "app" I own that moves as fast as I'd hoped. All of my office apps launch in 3-5 seconds and I don't have any problems navigating the file system, saving files, etc. Not as far as speed goes anyway.



    Hell, I wish Illustrator 10 and InDesign 2 ran as fast as MS Word and MS Powerpoint!
