Hotline suckz!?

I know this will come as a deep shock to some, but The Blue Meanie occasionally uses Hotline. Last year some references to an upcoming version 2 of the software appeared on the company's website, along with some intriguing screenshots. Then the company went bust. Then it went unbust again about a week later, placing an announcement on the site that the development team had been rehired and that the release of version 2 of the software was pending. Since then zip, nada, niente. Six months later we?re still stuck with version 1.8.5 of the client, easily the shoddiest carbonisation job since Appleworks 6 (it still uses an OS9-style progress bar, frequently freezes, etc). Does anyone know what happened? Did any pirate copies of version 2 leak out? (Something which I?m sure you?ll agree would only be poetic justice?. )

Speaking of HotLine, are there any alfas or betas of RealPlayer X circulating around there?

Carracho is better, especially since it's Mac only. The calibre of people is better, as is the ratio of spammers/bots/weirdos/other junk.

The only thing is, Carracho is VERY unstable in OS 9.1, in my experience. this was beta 5. Yes, for a beta, Carracho is good. Yes, even as a beta, it's better. I've yet to try it in MacOS X, but resume works anyway Does anyone know when Carracho will be updated or final?

Hotline is what got me started, but it sucks; <a href="http://www.hlsearch.com"; target="_blank">http://www.hlsearch.com</a>; is slick for server searches, though!

    Hotline in OS X sucks.

Therefore, i use the Cocoa clone, <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/frogblast"; target="_blank">Frogblast</a>. Works quite nicely- not all the features of the butt ugly official client (I believe it's a clone of the older 1.2.5 software rather than the 1.8.5 official client, but it certainly works nicely.

Plus, it's got all that cocoa-y goodness... toobars, CoreGraphics text rendering, etc...

    mmmmmm, frogblast...

Frogblast ROCKS with the one exception of it being a 1.2.3 clone and thusly not supporting folder downloads and threaded news. If it had those two things it would be too good to be true!

Carracho is much nicer. Since I (honestly and truly) only "borrow" software when I'm in a bind, I find that Carracho's atmosphere is much nicer. More free servers, etc.

The thing that really drives me away from Hotline is that I ran into a server that asked for a Paypal payment in order to gain access to their pirated files. Good grief! That's complete and utter piracy, completely unadulterated.

I was wondering how long it'd be till someone tried that. I don't think they'll be in business to long. I mean, it'd be pretty hard to explain that one to the judge ...

Carracho is pretty good, but the lack of a decent search engine is a pain

HL in X does indeed suck. I'll check out frogblast - cheers for the lead, Jonathan.

So no one knows anything about the legendary HL 2 then?

The port of Hotline to OS X is even worse than the port of AIM...and it takes a lot to suck that bad.

Frogblast is friggin great...all the advantages of Cocoa and a one windowed interface...but if you are an administrator it's a pain. Have to keep track of what users/bots/whatever are posting in the news...but you can't read it. Have to mess with accounts all the time...but there is no Administer Users option AND it doesn't have all of the privledges listed...so if you so much as rename somone, change the login, password, etc, they lose all of the privs that aren't listed. This necessitates using Hotline...which is unfortunately why it remains on my hard drive.

I'm not trying to make Frogblast look like crap (after all, I keep it in my dock and not Hotline)...just pointing out its bad parts. I really love the seperate icon/name for every bookmark. Plus it has a built-in icon browser which is awesome (much like Zombie's but not as easy to access.)

Carracho is also freaking awesome...and has some things that I would love to see in Hotline...mostly the fact that all of the administration tools are in the client, not the server, so you don't have to control the server to change them. Using Timbuktu or a similar remote-desktop tool is a pain for these things. The sad thing is Carracho Server is very unstable in OS X and there aren't any alternitives that I know of...I would love to see a background server like HXD.

Carracho wins my vote... the Interface is a little hard to get used to but the feature I love is File Search all connected servers...

Blue meanie, what is wrong with the "Carracho" section of <a href="http://www.hlsearch.com?"; target="_blank">www.hlsearch.com?</a>

It works for Carracho too, and Server Search is great. This is the best search for both, that I have seen. Better than that stupid search engine sadWYW, or whatever the heck it's called.

So no one knows when Carrasho, er, Carracho, is going to be updated?

The difference is that the Carracho section is a server description search, not a file search

Are you alleging that we use this software for unscrupulous purposes?

One day when looking through some hotline servers, I found a pre-release version of Hotline 2. Whether it is carbonized or not, I have no idea. Is there anyway to check?
