G3 Powerbook DVD ROM Drive failure

My DVD ROM drive has been getting more and more troublesome over the last few weeks. Tonight it got worse and upon investigation I found a split in the ribbon connecting the mechanism to the casing. Can this be fixed cost effectively or should I just rely on an external until I upgrade after Leopard ? I have found a place on the net who have an identical working drive for $200 which would hopefully have her performing like new, but how much cash should I chance on such an old machine ?



What would you do ?



PS. The drive is an LG DRN 8080B in a G3 PB 400mhz

    Sourced a Combo drive from iFixit.
