Disk space weirdness

Right now, according to Mac OS X 10.1.4, The Blue Meanie's hard drive has 1.21gigabytes free, but if I switch startup and boot into Mac OS 9 I am informed that I have only 900andsomething megabytes. This always happens - OS 9 always reports quite a bit less free disk space than OS X. Anyone got a clue why this happens? And which system is right? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

happens because OS 9 has Virtual Memory on and takes away by default the amount of RAM plus 1 mb that you have of real ram.

so if you have 640MB of RAM OS 9 will take 641MB of hd space for VM.

OS X has VM on but it takes space as needed
