My brother is going to be pissed when I tell him there's no Protools for X. He hates it how it always freezes in 9.x, oh well. It pisses me off how some companies are so damn slow to port to OSX

To be fair to Digidesign, ProTools is heavily hardware-based and Apple rolled out an entirely different driver model, on top of everything else that's different about OS X. Of particular importance to professional apps, the optimization strategies for OS X are totally different from the ones that worked with OS 9. And since ProTools wants constant access to its hardware (and the host processor), they're either going to have to port over their NT hack (not allowing any other applications to run concurrently, so that it's not preempted for too long) or recode everything to take advantage of OS X's realtime capabilities.

On top of all that, between CoreAudio, the vastly more efficient kernel, and the realtime capabilities, OS X is capable of doing things in software that required hardware in OS 9; so Digidesign has the opportunity to start afresh and roll out a less expensive ProTools that requires fewer PCI cards, with no loss in functionality. If they decided to go that route, it will be a massive undertaking.

Digidesign has committed to OS X, so it's a given that ProTools is coming. It's just that OS X is a dramatic enough change that their engineers had to have sat down to figure out exactly what would be coming, because ProTools can't be anything like a straight port to Carbon.

i read the other day that Digidesign announced ProTools for MacOS X. It will be released before the end of the year.

I don't blame them, OS X needed serious work, most audio developers were waiting for 10.2.

Steinberg said they aren't releasing Cubase SX until OS X 10.2 is released to the public. Same with Native Instruments.

Basically OS X won't be prime time for pro audio until early next year. Maybe Apple will have released some reasonably fast hardware by then.

it's apps and areas like this that Apple should really take a hands-on approach and assist these companies with their ports as much as possible. This is the KEY product for an Apple stronghold. The more time it takes to port the angrier customers will get and the more impatient.

True, but its obvious that 10.1 doesnt cut it for Audio apps yet, there is a major bug in Core Audio that Apple dont like to talk about which is why everyones waiting for 10.2. Been wondering where all the MIDI apps are....? Thats the reason (pun intended!)

Also consider that Apple and Digidesign have diverging philophies on Audio Production for the future. Apple is moving towards Native Processing using the host CPU while Digi makes it's money selling the External I/O interfaces and internal TDM Cards. I think Apple could assist Digi but not in a way that would really help get protools on OSX in a much quicker fashion as Digi will only be looking to support the minimum of Core Audio needed IMO.
