On top of all that, between CoreAudio, the vastly more efficient kernel, and the realtime capabilities, OS X is capable of doing things in software that required hardware in OS 9; so Digidesign has the opportunity to start afresh and roll out a less expensive ProTools that requires fewer PCI cards, with no loss in functionality. If they decided to go that route, it will be a massive undertaking.
Digidesign has committed to OS X, so it's a given that ProTools is coming. It's just that OS X is a dramatic enough change that their engineers had to have sat down to figure out exactly what would be coming, because ProTools can't be anything like a straight port to Carbon.

I don't blame them, OS X needed serious work, most audio developers were waiting for 10.2.
Steinberg said they aren't releasing Cubase SX until OS X 10.2 is released to the public. Same with Native Instruments.
Basically OS X won't be prime time for pro audio until early next year. Maybe Apple will have released some reasonably fast hardware by then.
