Are there any games [major ones?] that exist for the Mac Platform, or any games that anyone knows of in the future that's going to come to the mac?

doom III would be nice

    Forgot to mention:

All these games work natively in Mac OS X

natively as in cocoa-based? or carbon-based?

i hope doom 3 makes it! *sniff* even though it's over a year away...........

how do these games run on the mac os? compared to xp/windows?

i'm curious if there's some major drawbacks on the mac platform, since it hasn't been really used until recently?

    thanks for the link

There is a lot of misinformation being spread by the moronic, non-programmer types regarding this subject. Carbon and Cocoa are both equally "native" and neither has any innate performance gains over the other. The problem, though, is that Carbon has gotten a bad reputation because there are so many shoddy carbon ports still out. If the programmers take their time and properly update their code to use the current event model and follow UI guidelines, the result will be a beautiful app thats runs as well if not better than some Cocoa apps. [quote]<strong>i hope doom 3 makes it! *sniff* even though it's over a year away...........</strong><hr></blockquote>Well, John Carmack did debut the first public videos of Doom III on Macs at a MacWorld event some time ago. [quote]<strong>how do these games run on the mac os? compared to xp/windows?</strong><hr></blockquote>As with the whole Carbon vs. Cocoa issue, this rests solely of the dedication of the developers. Often, Macintosh ports are considered merely an afterthought and minimal effort is put into them. However, when done properly, Mac games can run pretty well. Plus, there are some excellent Mac-only games like those by Ambrosia Software.

isn't there some things under cocoa that can't be done/used in carbon apps?

because if there wasn't, then wouldn't everyone want to do their apps in carbon, so it can appeal to os9 & os x users?

have anyone tried wolfenstein for the mac, and tried it's equivelent on the PC? opinions?

again, *cross fingers* doom 3 :-)

Cocoa caters to Opjective-C whereas Carbon caters to C++. Cocoa offers a lot of features "for free" so the programmer may not have to write as code.

For example, OmniWeb is only 300,000 lines of code whereas Mozilla is around 1.5 million lines!

As Apple has said, Cocoa allows you to write a basic text editor with writing literally less than a dozen lines of code. That is Cocoa's biggest appeal: it's easier to program. That is, it's easier to program if you are writing a program from scratch. Many games however are ports of C++ code for the PC and are easier to do in Carbon. That's the same reason Photoshop and Office aren't Cocoa: the programmers would have to rewrite millions of lines of code.

[quote]<strong>have anyone tried wolfenstein for the mac, and tried it's equivelent on the PC? opinions?</strong><hr></blockquote>Well, i've never played the PC version, but I like it plenty well on my Mac.

Practically every "major" PC games comes out for mac eventually...(Jedi Knight 2 is coming to mac, yay!)

As far as they run...all games I've tried on my G4 run perfectly...frame rates are usually a good bit less on a the fastest mac than on the fastest PC...but a new Dual 1ghz G4 with a GeForce4Ti can pump up a decent amount of fps

Doom III is heavily rumored to come to mac...but don't get your hopes up...

Mainly better performance and some features that usually aren't utilized in mac games anyway. I'm not the expert on video cards so that's just a rough idea.

As long as you're buying a tower system, you'll be fine with games. The new iMac will suck for games like Doom 3 though.

And don't forget about my all-time favorite game -- StarCraft!

gobble gobble: i second that! what other games do you NEED if you've got starcraft. a shame thought that staredit is only for os 9, and it works really really slowly in classic, weird.
