Cross Platform gaming...

A question for all you gamers out there...Is cross-platform (PC vs. Mac) gaming possible? All my friends own PC's and I just bought an iBook, which should be here any moment. But I wanted to know if I could get a copy of Unreal Tournament, Quake III, etc., and game against them on their PC's. Any insight you all may have woulnd be great. Thanks.

Yup, its totally possible, and a good way to show them how much better Macs are when you are stomping them into the ground. If they are running on a LAN, or on regular internet game, you should be able to join and play no problem. The only problems you may find are with game mods....

I agree there's nothing like stomping a Peecee weenie in Unreal or Quake...expecially when they brag about having a GeForce Titatium, Razor Boomslang, Overclocked Monstrosity etc. Priceless!

Thanks for the info. Any idea when Medal of Honor is supposed to be out? Now if they would only port Morrowind over.

Its in the final testing stages, so baring the discovery of any major bugs i would expect it in the next 3 months

the only exception i have come across recently is RtCW, which i do believe uses separate servers for PCs and Macs...cuz i cant play with any "peecee weenies" i know.

but that's not a play-with-buddies type of game anyway.

Idon't know how much better an iBook is than a PC, dude. Most likely the iBook will be lagging while trying to handle all the stuff in a FPS game and your PC will buddies will just have another reason to bash the mac. But good luck anyway

Well actually, you like many others out there would be surprised at the iBook's gaming capabilities. I fired up Quake 3 last night and everyone was amazed at it's detail level and smooth gameplay. I have a 32MB ATI Radeon at home and the 16MB ATI in this iBook runs better. One thing I will recommend is uping the amount of RAM that they are shipped with. I went for 256, but will go higher later on.

Currently you can't play Mac RtCW online with PC users of RtCW. I believe that a soon to-be-released update will fix that though. Check MacGamer.

Regarding Quake III, I did find that I was sometimes at a disadvantage playing against PCs because few of the mods were for Mac users. For example, there's a grappling hook mod which I could never get to work on the Mac. Meanwhile all the PC users were climbing the walls like Spiderman. And didn't Id announce that they were going to stop updating the Mac Quake III patches?

Other games, like Starcraft, are totally compatible and not subject to such a crazy number of mods that Mac users are left in the dust.

Take it on a game by game basis. Research before you buy.

    ...you spoke too soon.

you can play pc users starcraft through b.net or modem - but on a lan pc's use ipx and macs use tcp/ip (a better standard IMHO) so no starcraft mixed lan q3 however plays just fine tcp/ip and the wolfensteinmptest runs mac/pc, not sure why the final doesnt ...

Edit- Remove Quote. Don't need it.

Wa-wa-wait. Starcraft has a MacIPX installer. With that you can play with Macs and PC's, I've done it before.

The only reason for this is we are behind (version-wise). RtCW on the PC is up to version 1.32 and we're at 1.1 (or something around there). The main reason is Punk Buster. It won't let non-punk-buster supporting versions to join punk-buster supporting versions. Punk buster helps to eliminate cheating from online games.

PS - We're supposed to be getting the 1.32 patch any week now...

But if they had the same version installed wouldn't they theoretically work?

Unless you're doing IP games, I believe the only other way (well, at least the most common way) to connect to other users is Microsoft's own Gaming Zone, whose client isn't compatible with the Mac, and probably never will be.
