    • Songs as Ringtones - Who over the age of 16 really wants this? How much of a deal breaker is this in reality?

    • Alarm Clock - Would be nice to have. Not sure if it is included just not advertised because it is so minor.

    • Games - There will be tons of web based games out very very soon.

    • Javascript support - Huh? It has this.

    • Any flash support - I hope Apple and Adobe are working on rectifying this. I can see it as a future software upgrade in a month or 2.

    • Instant Messaging - there are sites like meebo.com and others that will let you chat via web. Apple can roll these features out fairly easily as well.

    • Picture messages (MMS) - meh. never used them and I would find email a lot more versatile (not to mention cheaper). For those who need them, maybe emailing them to people's MMS account will work ([email protected])

    • Video recording - Would be nice but not a deal breaker.

    • VPN - I read somewhere that VPN is included.

    • Softphone (ipPhones) - Yeah right. Like ATT would go for that.

    • Wireless synch - Meh, i know how slow BT is for data transfer.

    • Voice recognition or voice dialing - This would be nice. I would like to see Apple introduce this with the next version or as a software upgrade.

    • Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Streaming (A2DP) - Meh.

    • Vibration Mode - Has it.

    • RSS Support - Has it via Safari.

    • Wifi sharing of content (ala Zune) - The record companies would not go for this and MS's way of doing it is pretty crappy.

    • One-size-fits-all headset jack (May have to buy an adapter for certain headphones) - Um, OK?

    • Use of bluetooth as a 'modem' - That would be useful albiet slow.

    • Handwriting Recognition - ?? Really? Going back 5 years in usability to include a stylus?

    • Dot Mac Integration - Agreed.

    • Google Doc support - agreed, maybe already possible. We'll see.

The Razr I got for $50 16 months ago does all of this... the only thing it doesnt have is the card slot, that is on a slightly newer rev.

My 3 year old sprint sanyo could do all of this too (Summer 04) -- including GPS

    FUCK THE iPhone

[QUOTE=Outsider;1103192]? Songs as Ringtones - Who over the age of 16 really wants this? How much of a deal breaker is this in reality? Never said it was a deal breaker. But LOTS of people want it. And they are over 16.

? Games - There will be tons of web based games out very very soon.We shall see...

? Javascript support - Huh? It has this. Source?

? VPN - I read somewhere that VPN is included.Source?

? Softphone (ipPhones) - Yeah right. Like ATT would go for that. They could restrict for wifi only. And this will be a MUST for really 'breaking out' of the grid.

? Wireless synch - Meh, i know how slow BT is for data transfer. I was referring to wifi.

? Vibration Mode - Has it. Whoops.

? RSS Support - Has it via Safari. I actually don't think so....can't seem to find this.

Javascript is the 'J' in AJAX, which is what Apple is pushing as the development environment for iPhone. It doesn't have Java.

    Unfortuneately, the iPhone:

    1) will not cure the heartbreak of Psoriasis (sorry)

    2) will not beam you up to the Enterprise (although Scottie is working hard on this)

    3) will not have a Taser or Mace attachment (if v2 does, all NYPD police will have one as standard issue)

    4) will not cure your smoking, drinking, Crachberry or prescription drug addiction (but may act as a surrogate for said conditions)

    5) will not be a replacement for Viagra or Levitra (but you won't have to worry about priapism)

    6) will not allow you to get the woman/man of your dreams (however, I might be wrong about this one )

    7) will not predict the winner of the 5th at Belmont this saturday (but you will be able to get the race results after it's run)

    8) does not have a Harry Potter-esque "Time Turner" (Apple did consult with JK Rowling but she would not divulge its secrets)

    9) will not replace a flux capacitor (although Dr. Emmit Brown is rumored to be working hard on this)

    10) will not have a light saber attachment (but the Force will definitely be with you!)

Why the hell did they leave out video recording. Its almost going backwards to be honest with all this stuff lacking. And on top of that they want to charge premium lol No chance in hell.

But the various videos on Apple's site don't seem to show any button or link that enables RSS in Safari on the iPhone. I use RSS in Safari on my Mac all the time, but it appears that RSS is disabled in iPhone's version of Safari.

    I could be wrong.

My guess is they will add stuff later, maybe when the europe version get's out.

There are too much shortcomings for me to buy one right now. (& i'm in europe )

I haven't read all about the iphone but I see some issues with it.

-connectivity 'on the road' / bandwidth

    -quicktime/realplayer/windows media support in safari

    -no alarm clock

    -no exchangable battery

-it should have real gps instead of google maps

    -chat program

That's about it, people here stated a ridiculous amount of services not available on the iphone like:

-mms: who cares? Kids... are kids gonna buy an iphone of 500 bucks? If u really need to send a picture U'd mail it, mms is about to die, all phones will become small computers.

-ringtones: i'd make my own ringtone in garageband or some other prog

-java: don't care much about it, apple should make safari the way it's on a normal computer.

    My thoughts...

I think you may be confusing Java with Javascript.

Java is a programming language used heavily in enterprise software and occasionally for desktop applications (Azureus, the popular BitTorrent client, is a Java program). Java's competitors are languages like C++ and the .Net languages.

Javascript is a client-side scripting language developed by Netscape (and originally named LiveScript) that enables certain dynamic behaviors on web sites. Its competitors are... well, there really aren't that many I guess. MS tried to get people to use VBScript with little success. I guess you could say Flash is a competitor in a way (isn't ActionScript a superset of Javascript? I'm not a big web guy).

In an attempt to capitalize on the huge buzz around Java, Netscape changed the name of their client-side scripting language shortly before it was released.

The truth is, the languages have almost nothing to do with each other, except for the convenient fact that they were released around the same time. See, back when Java first came out, it was billed as a way to make web pages more like desktop applications. Soon (or so the thinking went), every web page was going to be little more than a collection of Java "applets". Netscape wanted in on the hype, so LiveScript became JavaScript, and developers have been explaining the difference ever since.

edit: The iPhone will support JavaScript. I'd bet my first born on this. Hell, I'll throw in the second-born too. The iPhone will not support Java. J2ME (Java 2 Mobile Edition, if I had to hazard a guess) has become a very popular development platform for mobile phones and leaving it out is somewhat questionable. I wonder if the decision to do so was based in part on the fact that most J2ME applications were written for phones have have some kind of directional buttons / joystick. The iPhone's lack of this might cause some applications to function poorly or not at all.

If I cant drag\\drop MP3 and/or WAV files and use them as tones then it is a no go

Not yet. But the charge indicator is unreliable. I've only thrown it against the wall, no wait I mean I've only dropped it a few times.

WOW...I have dropped my razr down 2 flights of stairs onto concrete and it was just fine (other than the pre existing dust condition) at the bottom...anyone wanna try that with the iPhone?
