MacCentral already has a news article on it! See <a href="http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0206/03.office.php"; target="_blank">Microsoft announces Office v.X update, Messenger 3.0</a>

MSN Messenger 3.0 better be a lot stabler in OS 9 than 2.1 was. The last time I ran that in 9 (on one of the few occasions where I travel to the dark side) it crashed my comp and nearly wrecked my HD.

Umm... On Microsoft's webpage, it tells us that if we have OS X 10.1.5 or later, it will use the Quartz text smoothing (which rules!). But, I wonder who in the world has OS X 10.1.5 or later?

Of course, it's hard to get excited about .NET Messenger anymore. My @mac.com account is actually my passport, so Hotmail features are useless for me, and with iChat coming, this is more or less "yawnware." I mean, come on... Woo hoo, file transfers--it's about damned time. AIM's had that since, what, January?

...Unless of course, Microsoft actually went all-out in Cocoa and transparencies, the standard customizable toolbar interface used by apps like Mail, etc., instead of just plopping new features into the nasty Carbon port. Who knows, perhaps they'll even have a "hide toolbar" button after long last. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

I would think that this major release would support an Entourage Palm conduit. I mean, did Palm so completely rewrite everything in Palm Desktop 4 that it makes it extremely difficult to modify your existing conduits? Actually, I bet they did. It astounds me that Palm couldn't have written something that allowed old conduits to work with the new version of the Palm software. Ugh.

I, um, only know this because I read it on another message board. It didn't actually, like, happen to me or anything like that...

If you installed Office v.X with a "shady" serial, don't bother installing the update. It no worky no more.

O.K, has anyone downloaded the service pack already?

Did your Mac explode or did everything go smoothly

Last but not least, have you actually experienced the improvements that Microsoft claims?

I'm guessing Surfer's Serials are blacklisted? Looks like it's time to go iPod-ing, again. No, I wasn't that kid you read about. But no, Microsoft doesn't deserve my money, I actually paid for Office 98, and Windows, TWICE (two PCs.) Yes, wish the MacBU could be split up from them, along with 20 other pieces!

Anyone else find it interesting, the date they will release Palm conduits??? Just in time for the Apple buys Palm, or makes a Palm, or another iPDA, announcement. Okay, I just want iPDA

So to sum up my posts in the 10.1.5 thread,

Yes, Apple needs to get their shizzit together (they always release updates late at night I've noticed)

From Versiontracker's SR1 page, the very first item:

    [quote]

    What's new in this version:

Quartz text smoothing: Users of Mac OS X version 10.1.5 (which Apple hasn't released as of this story) or higher can take advantage of the Quartz drawing engine to smooth text edges. Quartz text smoothing makes on-screen text easier to read, particularly in Word and Entourage. Quartz text smoothing is also available in Excel and PowerPoint.

    <hr></blockquote>

Has anyone used Office X SR1 yet? It doesn't hurt anything, does it? No bugs or crashing, right? So, I guess I'm asking for experience with it in 10.1.4, but when 10.1.5 comes out, your experiences there are also welcome.

As with all major updates, I plan on waiting out a couple days for the many problems like this to start pouring in.

In either case, keep your install CD handy so if you are blocked you can quicky re-copy over the original files.

Just installed SR1. Unfortunately it did not fix my major BUG. I wanted to know if anyone else has this problem.

From time to time (actually maybe 1 out of 3 sessions) Word will go non-responsive when trying to save a file. I've tried to pin down exactly what triggers it by I can't seem to repeat it reliably.

When it happen there are two consistent things: 1) the save sheet ends up behind the window (I have Windowshade installed, and yes it still happens with windowshade not installed) and 2) I get a message that the document is in 'modal' condition.

This is still happening after SR1. Is this a known problem? Can anyone help?

    Thanks,

Well, I installed SR1 last night without a hitch. The installer didn't even ask for my registration number. (I am running a legally purchased acedemic version of Office.) Unfortunately, the update didn't fix the bug where document windows go under the menu bar. Otherwise it looks good.

Messenger 3.0 is pretty too. Rarely use it, though.

Hmm. It would appear that no one has posted any screenshots. I guess I'll be the first, eh?

As I said in the 10.1.5 Released thread:

    "

Either 10.1.5 and/or Office X SR-1 have major font problems. Macintouch is full of reports about weird display problems with fonts, especially PS fonts, but also regular fonts, if the Quartz Smoothing is turned on. I tend to believe it's Office SR-1's fault, since people report ALL other Carbon apps, with Silk smoothing, don't have the same font spacing problems.

    <a href="http://www.macintouch.com/mosxreader10.1.5pt01.html"; target="_blank">http://www.macintouch.com/mosxreader10.1.5pt01.html</a>;

    <a href="http://www.macintouch.com/officevx5.html"; target="_blank">http://www.macintouch.com/officevx5.html</a>;

    SR-2, coming next week?

    "

So, what does everyone think? 10.1.6 and/or SR-2 coming soon?

Does ANYONE here use PostScript fonts? I hear Office SR1 has problems with these in 10.1.5 with Quartz text smoothing, since they have a proprietary text engine. However some users say Silk screws up large (bigger than 12) PostScript fonts in other apps besides Office, as well???

What the hell? I just want SR-1. I don't want problems. Apple may be at fault here, as 10.1.5 looks really crappy according to everyone on the net!
