MP4 Audio for Apple Products

When will we see Apple Support for the iPod, iTunes, and other things with AAC, the MP4 Audio standard?

First of all, there is a smaller file for a little more better quality and the same encoding rate. This would make 1,000 songs in your pocket expand much more. Also, with this, QuickTime would catch on more quickly!

I was wondering about this earlier today...MP4 is supposedly very efficient with quality rivaling that of uncompressed CD audio, imagine how small the files would be at around the quality of a 192kbs MP3...

Maybe 4,000 songs in your pocket. I'm going to go play with a 6.1MB MP3 now...see if I can get about the same quality at a smaller size.

A while, AAC is still nascent and Apple's implementation is missing lots of features right now. You can't encode 44.1 KHz audio clips lower than 128 kbit for example. You also can't encode Main Profile AAC mp4s, only Low-Complexity ones.

Compare that to the refinement in the LAME mp3 encoder...

this (http://www.pogoproducts.com/) hideous thing ALREADY supports MP4, so I see no reason why Apple should not be ready with an MP4-supporting update to iPod and iTunes by MWNY at the latest

Do you think they could release an update to let people who already have an iPod to use it, or would you need a newer iPod?

An update of course. The iPod is plenty powerful and they had to be thinking about MP4 AAC support when they were developing it.

Yeah, all it would need is a firmware update.

    Hopefully with gray scale visualizations! <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

    I can see it:

    significantly less battery life!"

What kind of file-size reduction over mp3 are we talking about w/ mp4?

Some prelim reports from accelerateyourmac.com show roughly a %20 reduction. That makes a big difference if you have thousands of files. Sigh...I just don't know if I'm willing to re encode everything.
