Hello everybody, can anybody tell me which is the best music-exchange homepage (like napster) that also offers free mac download software? Thanks! Chris
LimeWire. It's not a site - it's a slick Gnutella client, so it's technically a program. However, it works even better than Napster did during its heyday. And it browses for movies and software. Let me just say that there's plenty of software to be had. If you're into that sort of thing.
I am so f*cking sick of hearing about all these clients to get music. I just want music. I want Napster back. OpenAG wasn't seen by the stupid site (GOD, who the F*CK thought of that dumbass idea for AudioGalaxy!?)
And, how do actually SEARCH in LimeWire? Where is the SEARCH button? I feel stupid, but there isn't one. I could't get it to SEARCH at all, I was connected, sharing, and searched for Kylie Minogue and John Williams. Nothing came up. Filled in the name, and desired bitrate.
What makes it worse is that you guys always seem to get it to work, really well! In fact, everyone but me seems to have moved on from Napster and found a better program! WTF?
iSwipe looks so rad, connecting to ALL these places, but never seems to actually download anything. Looks like it has potential...
Are you running LimeWire in OS X? I could never get the OS 9 version to work for me, although I have not tried it in like a year, either. If you have no search button under OS X, you can use "return" to begin the search. Also, you could try resizing your window. LimeWire is a Java application, and the graphical updating is SLOW under OS X until Apple gets the speed up to par (maybe in 1.4 Java?)
I agree LimeWire is the best of the options that I have seen since Napster's death... *sighs* *bows head*
<strong>AudioGalaxy rools you lamers. The best one out there, period. No stupid gnutella network to run like slow **** out of a dead donkey's ass.</strong><hr></blockquote>Well, I suppose I'll agree with Shanny.
For pirating music, there's nothing easier and faster than AudioGalaxy.
It is also garbage. Or maybe I'm just f*cking stupid! I can't get anything to work. macsatellite only downloads one song at a time, and there's almost nothing that I want on AG, like copyrighted stuff OR remixes. I desperately want the Duel of the Fates techno mix, I had it before my IBM 45GXP crashed. The whole web integration thing is stupid. I has to be either one or the other. What is the point of making you use two apps for one task, again? Duh...
Sputnix and OpenAG just refuse to work. OpenAG won't even log in correctly. So no AG for OS X at all.
iSwipe is a frikkin' COOL idea, I'd happily send some money to this guy. Except for one small detail. I give iSwipe hours, it gives me NOTHING. It will queue up huge lists with lots of promise, but no music ever seems to actually download. Ironic, considering the concept of this app, no?
No, hitting return in LimeWire doesn't work. I mean, I guess I'm stupid, but I'm not that stupid. I just can't get it to work, tried in X and 9, many different versions of both X and 9. Latest included.
I Feel Your Pain, ... , In Fact, We All Do... , God Bless Napster!... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> May It One Day Return, Saving Our Dollars Yet Again...
You all should try DrumBeat. It's REAL easy to use, and pretty good results to boot. It came on the CD with the new issue of MacAddict that I bought yesterday. It actually funtions a lot like Napster, but no central computers to get in trouble for.
OK, I may be out of my league, but I don't see where al these problems with LimeWire could've come from. I've downloaded hundreds of mp3's through it, and my friend downloaded complete copies of Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office, among others. I personally draw the line at pirating $600 programs, but the option is totally, unabashedly there.
In terms of actually using the program, I've been running it in OS9 for months. Admittedly, the first two versions were buggy as hell and slow like a mofo, but the current version, at least, has run seamlessly since I downloaded it.
The latest version features a search button, as well as the option to search for specific types of media, with all sorts of specifying fields for searching for track title, or artist, or what-have-you.

I, too, have pillaged the net of many softwares from gnutella and limewire. BTW, any of you using fink/Xdarwin or whatever the heck it is called (you know who you are), give gnapster a shot. It can connect to 'OpenNap' servers, and at any one time, you have like 200GB of music to steal. You can be connected to, say, 12 different server at once and search them all with one query.
My only beef is lamers who don't update their 'shared' file so you try to download, say, Ecstacy Club: Jesus Loves the Acid, and you're all full of glee after finding such an obscure classic, and then nothing downloads because it's not there. Grrr...
my dreams tonight will thank you for that wonderfull image, good thing I didn?t eat any pizza <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />
LIMEWIRE is so easy to use . . . what the ...? you choose 0-audio then type in the name or artist then hit return . . . . it works fine
it doesn't have near the range of obscure stuff that Napster had....but hell.. last weekend I downloaded more than enough for a whole CD of the group Television (proto-punk, Patti smith type NY rock from the 70s--MarqueeMoon et al) AND more than enough for a whole Gang-of-Four compilation of their best stuff . . . these are pretty obscure... (well not really... but its not Brittney Spears or Pink floyd or some other clone garbage!!) I even could've gotten a few songs from that greek prog. rock band from the 60s Aphrodite's Child.... now that's pretty obscure . . . unfortunately it wouldn't always hook me up to them though.
By the way, I think you shouldn't talk about program piracy on line . . . even if you do pirate you should keep it to yourself . . . for one, besides it being bad, and all that, it increases its visibility, which means more people will do it which will give more reason for extreme anti-hack methods to be put into place AND, more importantly, there will be more reason for reactionary elements in government to close down your rights and freedoms . . . ie: napster or internet spying by the FBI et al....
Napster was wonderful. Tried limewire, couldn't get it to do anything for me. Tried aquistion, it would find all sorts of stuff and then not download any of it. Used Sputnix to dl one song once. It took 3 days to get 3megs, and I was connected to the internet through a LAN. That just sucks. The only kind of luck I have had at all is through more pirate-like apps: Hotline, KDX. Though I can't say I'm a very big Hotline fan.

Go to VersionTracker and download the Sputnix or OpenAG unofficial client. Much better than messing with gnutella.

Seriously, go to limewire.com and try it out.
