10 time the hard drive capacity almost the same space

Hitachi has been working on Perpendicular Magnetic Recording. This, in therory, could be used to boost hard drive storge by as much as 10 times without a drastic increase in size. Currently, there has only been a 2.5 increase in data storage space but this should advance. They accomplish this increased storage by flipping the bits so they line up Perpendicular to each other.

In their video, possible the most annoying and stupid tech ad ever, it explains Perpendicular Magnetic Recording in a easy and "fun" way. (Please note that if you watch the video you may die from how horrid it is. )

Hitachi, along with a boat-load of other manufacturers, are already using perpendicular recording. It'll still be a while before we see those 60 GB micro-drives.
