forced restarts since 10.4.10

since applying the latest osx patch, may be coincidence not sure, my mbpro 15" has started grey screening and forcing me to power off/restart the last two reports have mentioned the airport card. full text below:

    that changing the encryption on your router may sort the issue.

    Boot up holding Shift, to disable all extra drivers, including the AirPort software. If that boots well, try reinstalling your OS (using the Archive and Install option) and run the updates again.

    machine boots and operates fine just periodically demands a hard reset thanks anyway.

    Someone I know had this issue recently and it was on an unencrypted network. It seems there may be a driver bug in 10.4.10. Fortunately, you can downgrade the files.



    Backup /System/Library/extensions/appleairport.kext, appleairport2.kext and io80211family.kext to somewhere on your drive.



    You get the airport 2007 02 update and the 10.4.9 combo update. Use Pacifist to open the packages and copy over the same files from /system/library/extensions. You also install the airport menu item from one of the packages.



    Then reboot and you will have the older drivers for 10.4.9.

    I'm not that brave yet. A unix sys admin by day even i'm wary of jumping in and hacking to that level as i know i don't really understand it. the change of encryption method mentioned in the link above seems to have done the trick at the moment. i'll give it a couple of weeks and see.

    I understand but it's no worse than what we used to do all the time in OS 9 installing extensions. If something screws up, you boot holding shift to boot without loading extensions.

    Interesting, I wonder if there are two issues going on here. Do you run the wireless with your machine on the mains or on battery? It seems people have been having kernel panics while using wifi on battery power.

    only had it occur when on battery but then i don't tend to use it on mains.
