iPhone Unlock Repercussions

Question: What will Apple do when the iPhone is finally SIM unlocked?

So far we have seen a bypass of the activation process & a partial carrier SIM unlock allowing the use of generic ATT SIMs. All of this has occured without a patch from Apple to the phone. If a full blown SIM unlock is reached do you think that they'll respond? The consequences either way could be huge.

Thoughts?

I guess we'll soon find out:

It's nice to see 3rd party developers getting software running too. I hope that Apple open up a devkit because without one, 3rd party software will make the iphone even less stable and give Apple even more of a support headache if people screw it up.

I know about the 'Hello World' app and I'm sure Apple does too. My point is at this moment they have chosen to just sit by and not interfere with people hacking the phone. I'm just wondering what happens when someone finally unlocks the thing and your average consumer can just pick one up and pop in their T-mobile SIM or whatever. I know they have a contract with ATT for exclusivity until 2009. Does that force them into having to act if it is unlocked? Or perhaps will they act out of 'good conscience' towards ATT? Is it even legal in the United States for them to re-lock a phone if it's been unlocked?

I had a weird thing happen to me yesterday. I had just turned on my iPhone and entered my SIM unlock code. I hadn't acquired a lock with the AT&T network yet and went to the settings screen. Underneath the Wi-Fi option was a Carrier option. I clicked on it, and got a Loading screen with the spinny icon you see when booting OS X. After a few seconds, the screen changed from Loading to Error. Backed out and went in and the same thing happened a second time. Backed out and while at the settings scree, the Carrier option just disappeared. Haven't seen it since but thought it was strange for the option to come out of and go back into the blue so quickly.

I haven't tried any kind of hacking or anything with this phone. Hasn't even been connected to my computer for syncing in about a week either.
