He makes lame excuses. "We don't want to have third party applications on the iPhone lest it brings AT&T's West Coast network down." (I don't remember the exact words.)
As someone stated above, it's just an old registration that will expire next year and Apple probably won't keep it.
Remember, Steve doesn't like the Newton. He killed the product line because it was the pet project of John Sculley, there isn't going to be a Newton anything anytime soon.

Oh no, they will not want to spend the 10.00 per year to maintain ownership.
They will keep it as long as they can....just in case.
When they bring it back, Steve Jobs will say he did not like it, with the technology at the time.
