from .mac help file

IMPORTANT: If you choose to convert your trial account to an email-only account, all your data files on Apple's servers (except for email messages) will be removed. Other .Mac services, such as iDisk, HomePage, Backup, and Virex, are not accessible to email-only accounts.

To convert your trial account to email-only, go to <a href="http://www.mac.com."; target="_blank">www.mac.com.</a> Click Account in the .Mac menu bar, then click the Email Account Management button. Enter the member name and password of the trial account you'd like to convert, then click Convert.

Print your account information for future reference, then click Continue.

Ha! For $99/year, you'd think that at least Apple would allow you to have a few more email-only accounts for free. $10 for an email-only account when you've already paid $99 for a full account is way overpriced. I hope that what they say about Steve Jobs being able to sell ice bags to Eskimos is true because if it's not, .mac will be a major flop.

Now, I can see .mac working out if they gave 4 email-only accounts to full subscribers at no additional cost and they also offered $10 email-only accounts to people who don't want the full subscription, but I don't see this becoming a bit hit under the current frigid and inflexible subscription rate.

This will face similar problems as the Cube. Some people at Apple seem to think that most mac users have infinite monetary resources. They were wrong about this with the Cube. Let's see if things have changed, but considering how well the economy is doing right now, I'd bet that they have only changed for the worse. The good new is that Apple won't lose money on this like they did on the Cube. The bad news is that Apple will not make as much as they can if they had a more flexible pricing plan that accommodated more customers. Of course, what's even worse is that this has turned into a PR disaster for Apple.

I put this on macnn and here too but little response... what do you guys think

Since you can register up to 10 additional email addresses why dont you register one .mac account at $100 get 10 of your friends to have their email addresses registered for additional $10 (10 friends x $10=$100 + 1 .mac account x $100=$200 total) and split the cost among the friends ($200/ 11 friends=$18.18/year/each friend). Of course these would have to be people that you trust. Just a thought! That way one would use the idisk and other tools and the others would have a .mac email at an affordable price

I see that you can make the email passwords seperate

Apple's .Mac help page has been updated:

"Converting your .Mac trial account to an email-only account

IMPORTANT: If you want to convert your .Mac trial account to an email-only account, you cannot do this directly. You must have a full .Mac member, who has purchased an additional email-only account, include your converted account as part of their membership. Once your trial account has been converted, all your data files (except for your email messages) will be removed from Apple's servers. Other .Mac services, such as iDisk, HomePage, Backup, and Virex, are not accessible to email-only accounts.

To convert someone else's trial account to email-only, you must be a full .Mac member who has purchased an additional email-only account. Go to <a href="http://www.mac.com,"; target="_blank">www.mac.com,</a> click Account in the .Mac menu bar, then click the Email Account Management button. Enter the member name and password of the trial account you want to convert, then click Convert.

Print the email-only account information for future reference, then click Continue. "
