Direct Connect for Mac OS X... 2nd Post

Hi. I posted about this subject a few months ago. Direct Connect is a Peer to Peer file sharing program much like Limewire, Hotline, Caraccho and so on are. One of the differences is that DC is based on hubs and it can download two categories of downloads that aren't easily downloadable otherwise: Full length [bootleg or DVD ripped] movies and complete Playstation, Playstation2 and XboX games. The only catch is that each DC hub has a minimum amount that has to be shared. If you don't share that miminum amount then you're kicked out with a message telling you to share more. There is a version of DC for OS X in the makes but that news was posted back in mid March.

Their site is

Well hello everyone. I just thought I would let the community know what is going on around here since I haven't posted for quite some time.

Â*Â*Â*Â* I've spent the last couple of months working on a new code base for Direct Connect. Initially this code will see a Mac OSX GUI, followed by GNU/Linux GUI, and finally and Windows GUI - BeOS users might be in for a surprise too. There is no release date set.

Â*Â*Â*Â* I'd also like to thank everyone for putting up the petabyte. We sure smashed right through that barrier! 1500TB Now!

Have fun -

Jon <hr></blockquote>.

I got the above quote from their "News" page.

I've emailed them SEVERAL times and I've just about given up. I can use it under Virtual PC, a Windows 9x/XP emulator. Well, post your thoughts. I'm not COMPLETELY discouraged but I'm getting there.

Feel free to not only reply to this post for more information but to send me an instant message or email me at [email protected] . Make the subject DC for Mac OS X so i dont delete it by mistake.

Thanks for reading this ultra long post.

PS One reason i REALLY want DC for Mac OS X is because Limewire is starting to annoy the hell outta me with its "Requery has been sent. Wait XXX about of seconds for a reply. (The XXX does not have any pornographic references. lol.) The xxx would be the number of seconds i.e. 280 seconds. Just thought I would clarify that before I get yelled at. In fact I'm just about to go onto Limewire now.

Ok. I called up Jon Hess, the creator of DC and he said that Mac OS X users can expect DC for Mac OS X by this fall. I'm sure he wouldnt mind me saying this but he says that he has a working alpha that can connect but it can only upload and download and it cant search. whats cool is that the new version of DC is releasing in this order: Mac OS X, Linux/BeOS, and last and absolutely least Windows. THis is the first time ive seen a new version of a program released before it Windows counterpart. Im happy to know that. Now that Ive gotten thiis information Im happy. Please post your comments. No wise cracks please,

    Thanks

JavaDC doesnt work right for me. It runs too slow and I cant get the sharing to appear. If anyone could help me with that I would be very greatful. I have a year 2001 model iBook 600 MHz, 384 MB RAM, 12.1'' DIsplay running Mac OS X 10.1.5. Ive updated my Java settings from Apple's Software update so it should be working but its not.

Can anyone help me get JavaDC working while I wait for the Mac OS X native version?

Anyone that programs a client/server program in Visual Basic is off a little in my opinion. Although I have to give him props that DC is a great concept that works in the melding of IRC and P2P networks to form a new type of file sharing program. It would also be nice if Hess posted more updates as to his progress on the newer versions of DC. Posting that he might be working on something, maybe. In March and then not doing anything until he releases it in the fall, is not treating the user community that makes or breaks the network, and in fact IS the network. ( btw if anyone is reading this that knows him, I hope that he fixes the flooding problem in the Hub software ... people doing things like refreshing their file list or changing their file share thousands of times a second to flood the server with packets .. nice things that the k1dd13z like to do )

In regards to JavaDC, it's still in development. I know the developer. He was working on active/passive last time I talked to him.

Sorry for the triple post ( not paying attention to what I am doing tonight ). But the reason that Hess is making the Windows version last is because there is already a Windows version. It makes sense to port his new code-base to the other OSes first and increase the possible user base, and THEN upgrade the windows version. And I'm sure that there is more demand for OSX/Linux versions than there is for a new Windows version. Especially with all the DC clones for Windows ( don't use the dc++ dc-clone for windows if you are behind a firewall and want to use port forwarding to remain 'active' , transfers will randomly time out)

Connect to animeunlimited.dns2go.com:411 . The developer's name is 'Unimaginative'. Talk to him. You'll need like 15GB of shared files to get in. I can look for his email if you don't have that. (my anime videos folder is 52GB alone)

edit: that IP is of the DC Hub that I used to host.

It's the fact that there are very few college kids with nice fat connections during the summer. I get all my fansubs through someone I know at MSU this summer.

    <a href="http://www.umich.edu/~bsandrow/Anime List.html&quot; target="_blank">Anime list</a> It's sorta out of date. I have like 10 new series that aren't on there. I'll update it tonight.

(we are waaay off topic )

Once you actually create a list it isn't hard to keep it up. I just copy a current entry and change the data.
