I have a WD external USB drive that works fine on my G4 PowerBook but when I plug it in the new iMac it doesn't mount. It works fine under Parallels on the same machine.
When you open Disk utility in /applications/utilities, does the drive show up in the left sidebar? If so and there is a partition under it, will it let you mount it if you select it?
I don't recommend following the steps in the first one as that involves installing a third party EFI shell but I just posted it to show people have had similar problems.
I would try to use the USB prober utility from the developer kit and try to get the drive to mount that way. I uploaded it for you to save you getting the developer kit - it should run without the full kit:

Does it do this after a reboot too?
Yep. Opening up VMWare or Parallels is the only way I can access the drive or plug it in my G4 PB.
