Disappearing program

I have an iMac G4 with tiger installed. I wanted to run a classic shareware app called Soundview, and I installed classic support from a software restore CD. When I open the program, the classic environment boots up fine, but the program opens for a split second and then closes down. Does anyone have any ideas?

    How old is this app and where did you get it? It must be fairly obscure because neither VersionTracker, MacUpdate, nor Pure Mac have a record of it. The thing that you must understand is that not all MacOS 9 apps are Classic-compatible. Classic is severely limited in its access to hardware. Also, what does this app do that you can't do with a MacOS X app?

    Sound View 1.2

    112k BinHex4.0,StuffIt3.50

    Allows you to view real-time time-wave and frequency spectrum info from any Macintosh sound input device. You can record and playback 8-bit sound, as well.

    Fat binary. Shareware.



    I used this program for years on an old classic Mac. I haven't found another program that displays FFT soundwaves in real time as well as this very old app. I use it for teaching about sound and synthesizers. If anyone knows a more modern app that does this, please let me know...

    Thanks for posting these. Unfortunately, none of them show the realtime waterfall-type 3D FFT disply that I need. One of them might, but it is quite pricey. Soundview is free, and does just what I need.



    Does the program opening and then disappearing immediately mean that it cannot possibly run on a modern Mac in classic mode, or is it still possible that it could somehow run?

    There is a newer version of SoundView, SoundView 1.4.3. I downloaded it and ran it on my dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac G5. It runs fine.

    I think that is the version I have, not the 1.2. It's the same site I got it from.



    Are you running it in Classic mode? What OS are you running?

    You should be able to get it to run. How did you install the classic system and does the app need something like quicktime to be installed? Maybe it requires an extension that isn't in place. I can't remember what rebuilding the OS 9 desktop did but you can try that - the option is in the system prefs under the classic option.

    Even if you do get the soundview to work, I think it's a good idea to try and migrate to an OS X native app. Eventually, you will likely move to an Intel machine and classic apps don't run at all on them except via emulators like Sheepshaver.

    G5s can't boot MacOS 9. It has to run in Classic mode. My OS is MacOS X 10.4.10 fully patched. My Classic environment is the most recent Classic version of MacOS 9.2.2. My computer is a 2003 first-generation 2.0 GHz dual PowerMac G5 with no haxies.

    So, my iMac G4 with OSX 10.4 should run the program. I may need a more recent classic version...mayber that's the problem.
