iChat Question

Is the only way to use iChat, is though a .mac accout?

    No. AOL instant messenger (AIM) works just fine.

    So you have to either have a .mac accout or AIM account?

    jabber will work too. (Gmail is one.) I don't know how any other chat services transmit. Jabber is kind of a catch-all though.

    If you're talking about video chat, AIM and .Mac are the only protocols that iChat supports that also support video chat. If you don't use video chat, Adium should work (very) well, and it supports every protocol imaginable.

    You can video/audio chat over Jabber as well, albeit only with other iChat users.

    Sorry, Jabber is not supported to use video or voice iChat.

    You need an AIM (free) or .mac ($100/year) account.



    I recommend Skype. It is independent of iChat but works more reliably. And it is also FREE.

    umm... yeah it is. I just had a one way video/two way audio chat yesterday with my friend who lacks an iSight

    Or... you could sign up for the .Mac free trial for 60 days, and when it expires, you will lose all of its features except that you can continue to use your .mac for iChat without paying...
